State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping n. a. Admiral Makarov is organized in 2012 by emerging the two glorious higher vocational institutions – the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy and the Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterway Communications – the eldest national transport University, leading its history from 1809, when in Saint Petersburg the Institute of Corps of Engineers for Waterways and Land Communications has been established.

Nowadays our University definitely resembles large transport educational centre for all-level training throughout the modern concept of life-long learning. Teaching of students and cadets is realized on technical, natural-scientific and humanitarian profiles directly or indirectly connected with globalized shipping industry, shipbuilding and transport logistics. The higher vocational training at SUMIS n.a. Adm. Makarov is provided both for Russian and foreign students from more than 38 countries. The University participates in a number of national and international projects and has extensive contacts with domestic and foreign Universities and organisations.

University’s administration provides all the opportunities for the students and cadets to advance of their abilities, to be skilled for their professional activity.

There are number of laboratories and training centres functioning at SUMIS. Among them are: the Laboratory of Safety of Hydrotechnical Engineering Constructions n.a. Prof. V. E. Timonov, the Laboratory of Modelling of Transport Processes n.a. Prof. A. S. Butov, the Laboratory of Vessel’s Navigation Qualities (Towing Tank), The Planetarium n.a. Prof. K. A. Emets, the Laboratory of Vessels Power Plant, Makarov Training Centre and different other Training Centers for ashore personnel and seafarerers of ports and shipping companies.

Admiral Makarov State University is respectful HEI for its professors and instructors, among which there are Honoured Scientists, Honoured Transport Specialists and Experts in their field. For many years they share their wide knowledge and experience with the students and cadets; their graduates do well in maritime and inland waterway transport, apply their knowledge and professional skills in shipping, ports, cruise tourism, shipbuilding and ship repair, engineering, hydrography, geodesy and water supply management etc.

We are proud of our University and its history; we keep traditions and introduce advanced concepts in an education system within the University.
