WAYS TO SAY NO

🚫 Saying no isn’t always easy—but it’s often necessary. We all, from time to time, have to say NO.

Let's look at some other ways of saying NO in English:

1. I wish I could but... — Я бы хотел, но...
🖊 I wish I could but the family expects me.

2. I think I’ll pass. — Думаю, я откажусь.
🖊 I think I'll pass on the fake peanut brittle, though.

3. Over my dead body. — Только через мой труп.
🖊 When she first mentioned what's about to happen, I said, "Over my dead body."

4. I don’t think so. — Я так не думаю.
🖊 Is this the right place to catch the bus? — I don't think so.

5. The answer is no. — Мой ответ отрицательный.
🖊 The answer is no, there is no liquid water on the surface of Mars today.

6. No way! — Ни за что!
🖊 No way, you love that house.

7. I’d love to, but... — Я бы не против, но...
🖊 I'd love to, but I'm in a rush.

8. No chance! — Исключено! / Без шансов!
🖊 We can even write you a check right now. No chance. Cash only.

9. Count me out. — Я пас. / На меня не рассчитывай.
🖊 Scuba diving? Oh no, count me out - I hate being under water!

10. Not likely. — Навряд ли. / Как бы не так.
🖊 "Do you want to come running with me?" "Not likely!"

11. Not on your life! — Ни за что!
🖊 "So you're going to bring Kev, are you?" "Not on your life!"

12. In a (short) word, no. — Если вкратце, то нет.
🖊 In a short word, Larry, no. The evidence against Simpson is overwhelming.

And remember, saying no doesn’t mean that you are being rude, selfish, or unkind. Sometimes it is better to say no now than be resentful later.

Comparing two photographs

❓ Task: Compare and contrast two given photos according to the given plan.

✅ Strategy:

1. Study the task and the photos carefully. There are two photos which you are going to compare and contrast.
2. Find the common topic of the two photos.
3. Think about an introductory part (1-2 sentences).
4. While talking, stick to the points of the plan.
5. When you are comparing and contrasting things, talk about one or two the most important similarities and differences. Do not get into details.
6. Provide 1-2 arguments to explain your choice/preference.
7. Think about some conclusion (1-2 sentences). Use a closing structure, (e.g. In conclusion, I would like to say that ...)
8. Use linkers between different logical parts of your speech.
9. Manage your time — you have 1.5 minutes to prepare and no more than 2 minutes for your speech.

Good luck!
