WAYS TO SAY NO
🚫 Saying no isn’t always easy—but it’s often necessary. We all, from time to time, have to say NO.
Let's look at some other ways of saying NO in English:
1. I wish I could but... — Я бы хотел, но...
🖊 I wish I could but the family expects me.
2. I think I’ll pass. — Думаю, я откажусь.
🖊 I think I'll pass on the fake peanut brittle, though.
3. Over my dead body. — Только через мой труп.
🖊 When she first mentioned what's about to happen, I said, "Over my dead body."
4. I don’t think so. — Я так не думаю.
🖊 Is this the right place to catch the bus? — I don't think so.
5. The answer is no. — Мой ответ отрицательный.
🖊 The answer is no, there is no liquid water on the surface of Mars today.
6. No way! — Ни за что!
🖊 No way, you love that house.
7. I’d love to, but... — Я бы не против, но...
🖊 I'd love to, but I'm in a rush.
8. No chance! — Исключено! / Без шансов!
🖊 We can even write you a check right now. No chance. Cash only.
9. Count me out. — Я пас. / На меня не рассчитывай.
🖊 Scuba diving? Oh no, count me out - I hate being under water!
10. Not likely. — Навряд ли. / Как бы не так.
🖊 "Do you want to come running with me?" "Not likely!"
11. Not on your life! — Ни за что!
🖊 "So you're going to bring Kev, are you?" "Not on your life!"
12. In a (short) word, no. — Если вкратце, то нет.
🖊 In a short word, Larry, no. The evidence against Simpson is overwhelming.
And remember, saying no doesn’t mean that you are being rude, selfish, or unkind. Sometimes it is better to say no now than be resentful later.
