At certain temple festivals in China and across Chinese folk-religion communities, devotees and spirit mediums walk barefoot over a bed of glowing coals. Tied to Taoist practice, the rite is meant to purify the participants and the temple's deity and to drive away evil and misfortune. Walkers hold that faith protects them and that only those who doubt will be burned. Versions of the ceremony appear wherever these communities have settled, including Taiwan and parts of Southeast Asia, and the coal-bed crossing is often the dramatic centerpiece of a much longer festival.

Jupiter is composed mostly of hydrogen and helium and formed at the same time as the Sun from the same primordial gas cloud. It is more massive than every other planet in the solar system combined, giving it more in common with a star than with the rocky inner planets.
What separates a gas giant from a star is mass. Jupiter has about one-thousandth the mass of the Sun, roughly 80 times less than the amount needed to start hydrogen fusion at its center. The phrase "failed star" is a popular shorthand for that gap, but modern astronomy has shown that the term is not really accurate.

TOI-700 d is one of the few Earth-sized planets in the habitable zone of a relatively calm star. Its star is quiet, its orbit stable, and its size nearly identical to Earth's, just 7.3% larger. NASA estimates it could be about 25% more massive than Earth. Discovered in 2020, it takes 37.4 days to orbit its red dwarf star, which is cooler and smaller than our Sun.
Scientists have long questioned whether planets around red dwarfs can support life. While TOI-700 d is close enough for liquid water, stellar radiation, atmospheric loss, and other factors still make habitability uncertain. If it has oceans, they could be calm and long-lasting. If it has continents, they might bask under a soft red glow.
Computer models suggest the planet is tidally locked, with one side in near-constant daylight and the other in near-constant darkness. Some models show an ocean-covered world with a carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere similar to ancient Mars, while others suggest a dry, cloudless planet. Scientists have tested more than 20 possible versions of TOI-700 d, but none have been confirmed. Even at light speed, it would take more than 100 years to reach

Forest cover is one of Japan's greatest natural assets. About 68% of the country is forested, placing Japan among the world's most heavily forested developed nations. Around 40% of these forests were planted after World War II, mainly with sugi cedar and hinoki cypress. While demand for domestic timber declined, high-quality Japanese cedar and cypress remain valued exports across Asia.
