New faces, same mission ✨

With a new school year underway, we’re kicking off the second edition of our Internship Programme by welcoming 13 new managers to our Programmes, Partnerships, Impact and Communications departments.

Across the 2026/2027 school year, our new team members will receive personalised guidance, training and mentorship, while contributing to Native Scientists’ mission.

The programme kicked off on 8 September with a warm welcome session, hosted at the FLAD . The event brought the team together to share what they’re hoping to learn this year.

At Native Scientists, we connect children and scientists, because we believe that investing in the next generation means investing in a fairer, more scientifically literate future. Every interaction with a scientist could be the moment a child discovers their calling.

✨ Que condições reais precisam de existir para que todas as crianças tenham acesso à ciência?

Foi esta a pergunta que orientou o painel "Tornar a ciência uma possibilidade para as crianças", no nosso primeiro Ponto de Interrogação, na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.

Este painel reúne perspetivas complementares da educação e da ciência, juntando quem faz ciência, quem ensina e quem aprende: Tiago Alves (Imperial College London), Antónia Estrela (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa e Politécnico de Lisboa), Maria Fernanda Matos (Agrupamento de Escolas Laranjeiras) e Simão Morim, aluno da Escola Básica de Cadilhe.

A presença de uma criança no painel trouxe algo que nenhum discurso institucional consegue substituir: a perspetiva direta de quem vive, todos os dias, o impacto - ou a falta dele - das oportunidades científicas na escola.

A conversa deixou clara uma ideia central: a curiosidade científica nasce cedo, mas só se transforma em possibilidade real quando escolas, famílias e pessoas cientistas constroem, em conjunto, as condições para que aconteça.

🔬 What if the way we "teach" science has been backwards all along?

For years, science engagement models have treated experts and audiences as separate roles - the ones who know, and the ones who learn. Our latest peer-reviewed article, developed with NOVA University Lisbon and its Research Center for Linguistics (CLUNL), challenges that idea.

Published on 10 July in the Science Communication Journal, it introduces the Relational Engagement Model: the idea that real engagement happens when people find something of themselves in the person in front of them. A shared background. A shared language. A shared story.

It's an idea we didn't need to imagine as we've been living it through our educational programmes, where children meet scientists who once sat in their same classrooms, or speak their same heritage language.
This is our sixth scientific article, and proof that the moments we create every day also help shape how the world thinks about science engagement. ✨

✨ Nenhuma instituição consegue garantir sozinha o acesso das crianças à ciência.

Foi esta a ideia central do painel do Ponto de Interrogação: "O papel das parcerias para uma educação mais justa e inclusiva", moderada por José Maria Pimentel (45 Graus), com Tiago Pereira (Fundação Mendes Gonçalves), Carla Sepúlveda (ex-vereadora da Educação em Braga), Afonso Arnaldo (Deloitte) e Paulo Marques.

A conversa deixou claro que transformar a educação exige colaboração entre sectores, investimento sustentado e uma visão partilhada do impacto social da ciência. Nenhuma fundação, empresa ou municipio consegue fazer isto sozinha - é um trabalho de equipa.

Na Native Scientists, sabemos bem disso. É graças a quem caminha connosco que conseguimos criar pontes entre crianças e cientistas em cada vez mais comunidades.

✨ "Eu só vim para provar que dou aulas há 45 anos... e não comecem a fazer contas!" 😄

Foi assim, com um sorriso, que a professora Maria Fernanda Matos, do Agrupamento de Escolas Laranjeiras (Lisboa), abriu a sua participação no Ponto de Interrogação, o nosso primeiro encontro de promotores e promotoras de literacia científica.

Mas por trás da boa disposição, ficou uma mensagem clara: aproximar crianças e cientistas não pode ser um momento isolado - tem de fazer parte da rotina pedagógica. Porque quando as crianças, desde tenra idade, conhecem o que é uma pessoa cientista e o seu trabalho, isso pode despertar curiosidades... e até uma nova carreira.

Na Native Scientists, é exactamente isto que procuramos fazer: criar pontes entre crianças e cientistas, pela Europa fora.

Our Internship Programme has officially come to an end, and the feedback collected from our team shows just how successful the experience was.

All participants agreed that their expectations were met, giving the programme outstanding evaluation scores:
👉 Overall experience: 4.7 out of 5
👉 Mentorship and 1:1 support: 4.9 out of 5
👉 Learning experience: 4.6 out of 5

As a direct result of this journey, 94% of the participants stated that they feel more prepared to enter the labour market. Beyond developing technical skills, the programme offered a profound sense of purpose. Participants shared that it helped them realise their own power to reduce inequalities and that seeing the direct impact and the spark in children's eyes made every backstage process worth optimising. As one participant beautifully noted, "when a child sees themselves represented, a whole world of possibilities changes."

We are incredibly grateful to every participant who dedicated their time and passion to our mission this year. 🙏
