Advanced Seminar - ANOTHER MUSIC IN A DIFFERENT ROOM to be held in Porto, between July 14th and July 16th, 2014 (PTDC/CS-SOC/118830/2010).

It’s with a great pleasure, the Coordination of KISMIF International Conference announces the Advanced Seminar ANOTHER MUSIC IN A DIFFERENT ROOM to be held in Porto, between July 14th and July 16th, 2014. The organisation of this Advanced Seminar will be undertaken by the Research Project Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! The opportunity to initiate the Advanced Seminar is related to the realization o

f KISMIF International Conference, and the possibility of deepening both theoretical and methodological questions in both proximity and dialogue with some of the main world references of the urban musical scenes. OBJECT:

State of the art of urban musical scenes. This advanced seminar is the result of a series of developed works in the last decade within the framework of social sciences, namely Sociology of Culture, Sociology of Arts, Sociology of Youth, Urban Sociology and Sociology of Music. Hence, it is important to understand the importance, functioning, process, the agents, characteristics, genres and subgenres of the current urban music scenes. This will lead to a insightful debate about its mains aspects and structuring guidelines. Since the publication of the of the emblematic book Music Scenes: Local, Translocal, and Virtual by Andy Bennett and Richard A. Peterson in the last decade, this will be the first decisive moment of systematization of the transformations of music scenes from the presentation of this work until now. The music scenes invite us to map the territory of the city in new ways while, at the same time, defining types of activity whose relationship with the territory is not easily expressed. There exists a contradiction between the growing visibility of the urban music scenes and its persistent illegitimacy as a sociological object of investigation. Such a contradiction is a research challenge to pursuit. OBJECTIVES:

# Explore the concept of the contemporary music scene, understand its dynamics and the challenges
of the transformations of different social, historical and geographical contexts.
# Apply techniques and methodologies of analysis and research of urban music scenes.
# Identify and approach the axis of analysis in the configuration of the urban music scene: aging,
gender, social integration, careers, professionalization, amateur activities, risks and DIY cultures.
# Analyse and systematize emblematic cases of local, trans-local and virtual scenes.
# Discover the newest developments in cultural policies concerning urban music scenes, namely
a paradigm regarding constant musical dematerialization.

Due to the deepening crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have taken the decision to postpone the KISMIF Conference planned for July this year TO 6-10 JULY 2021.

This has not been an easy decision to make but, given the current travel restrictions and health considerations, we feel that this is the best way forward.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE ALREADY SUBMITTED AN ABSTRACT FOR KISMIF 2020, this will be counted as a submission for next year's Conference.

FOR THOSE WHO HESITATED TO SEND AN ABSTRACT, PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THE CALL FOR PAPERS HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL 30 JUNE 2020. You can submit your proposal for the conference and summer school here: https://www.kismifconference.com/call-conference/abstract-submision/

In order to offset some of the costs already outlaid for the Conference, WE WILL ACCEPT REGISTRATIONS FROM 1 AUGUST 2020. For that just follow the link: https://www.kismifconference.com/registrations/

We are considering staging A SMALL EVENT IN PORTO IN SEPTEMBER 2020. This might take the form of a 1 - 2 day symposium or an online event. We will keep you informed about this.

KISMIF focuses on cultural practices that are used to face more massive and uniform forms of cultural production/creation/mediation, by activating an anti-hegemonic ethos centered around the aesthetics and policies of the daily ‘arts of doing’.
