Through evolution, the process of life has organized matter into a myriad of interlinked forms from molecules to ecosystems. Neuroscience attempts to understand the behavior of individual organisms within this web in terms of the structure and function of their nervous systems. A major current challenge in neuroscience is to understand how properly functioning neural circuits support intelligent,

adaptive behavior and how the dysfunction of these circuits can be prevented. Based on work over the last century, this appears to be a problem ripe for progress but which may demand a paradigm shift in current thinking and approaches. The Champalimaud Research (CR) seeks to facilitate the quest of scientists to forge new links between nervous system function and behavior. The scientific goals of the programme are represented not by a particular field within neuroscience, but by the full intellectual scope of the scientists of the programme. The aspiration of the CR as an organization is to help those scientists to reach their full creative potential and to promote collective achievements beyond those reachable by individual scientists or laboratory groups. This is a challenge that we believe demands that we examine, question and attempt to improve the scientific processes itself. Toward this end, the vision of the CR seeks to promote an institutional culture based on the following aims:

To maximize cooperation without sacrificing independence and diversity of thought;
To foster good life quality, recognizing that well-being and productivity go hand in hand;
To be a hub for scientific interaction, engaging our peers in productive exchange rather than competition;
To share our knowledge not only within the scientific community but with the community at large;
To continually renew the organization itself, nurturing new scientific approaches and the organizational structures that encourage them. If we are successful, the legacy of the CNP will be not only in advances scientific knowledge but advances in the process by which scientific knowledge is sought. The CR also hosts the International Physiology and Neuroscience Doctoral Programme (INPDP), a PhD programme in neuroscience that includes one year of intensive training to provide a broad foundation for innovative interdisciplinary work in basic or applied neuroscience, especially in the areas of neural systems underlying behaviour.

The Champalimaud Foundation is honoured to welcome 💡Nobel Laureate Thomas C. Südhof for a public lecture on 17 October at 11:00am in the CF Auditorium.

Südhof was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, alongside James Rothman and Randy Schekman, for their discoveries on the key molecular mechanisms behind the release of neurotransmitters at synapses, helping explain how information is passed between nerve cells. 🧠🔬

🧬 An international collaboration of over 300 scientists involving 2,780 patients across Europe and the United States has...

🧬 An international collaboration of over 300 scientists involving 2,780 patients across Europe and the United States has generated and characterised the largest collection of patient-derived 3D cancer models (organoids) to date. The results were recently published in three papers in Nature magazine.

Two researchers now based at the Würth Research Centre of Hope for Pancreatic Cancer at the Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre contributed to this landmark initiative:
🔬 José Espejo Valle-Inclán, contributed to the bioinformatic analyses and genomic characterisation of the organoids.
🧬 Vincenzo Corbo, co-led the site in Verona, which generated and contributed more than 70 pancreatic and colorectal cancer organoid models to the international resource.

Bringing together 665 patient-derived organoids, this initiative creates a valuable resource and asset for researchers studying cancer biology, tumour evolution and treatment resistance.

At the Champalimaud Foundation, both researchers are now building on this work to develop a dedicated pancreatic cancer organoid platform, with the aim of advancing our understanding of this challenging disease.

💻 🧠 It's a wrap for this year’s Cajal Advanced Neuroscience Training Programme at the Champalimaud Foundation / Fundação Champalimaud (CF)!

👥 We had the pleasure of hosting the ‘Quantitative Approaches to Behavior and Virtual Reality’ course, with neuroscientists Ann Kennedy (Scripps Research), Giorgio Gilestro (Imperial College London) and Daniel McNamee (CF), and "The Brain Prize Course – Computational and Theoretical Neuroscience", coordinated by Alfonso Renart (CF), Maria Neimark Geffen (University of Pennsylvania), Julijana Gjorgjieva (TU München) and Omri Barak (Technion - Israel Institute of Technology).

This year, participants:
🧠 Learned new computational approaches to study the brain and behaviour;
🔬 Used cutting-edge techniques to perform neuronal recordings;
🤖 Analysed neuroscience data and built computational models;
💻 Did hands-on projects, from experimental design to data analysis;
🏄🏽‍♀️ And even mastered the great art of axe throwing and of surfing the Atlantic Ocean!

We can’t wait for what next year’s courses will bring!

📣 The programme for the symposium 🟪 Keeping the Psychedelic Promise: From Bench to Bedside 🟪 is out. Check the full lineup of speakers on our website and make sure to sign up!

🧠 Neuroimaging and the mechanisms of psychedelics

🤝 Organised by the 🇪🇺 COST Action PSY-NET Clinical Working Group, this cross-disciplinary event will examine how psychedelics can move from bench to bedside, with discussions on mechanisms, clinical research, implementation and the future of accessible psychedelic therapy.

📖🧠 What do stories reveal about the workings of the human mind?

💭 At the latest Ar Event, "We Begin with a Story", we explored why do some stories stay with us for years, while others fade away.

Together, Saheli Roy, Lydia Fettweiss Neto, Buddhika Bellana and Joe Stubbersfield took the audience on a journey through neuroscience, psychology and storytelling, revealing how stories shape our thoughts, memories, emotions and the evolution of cultures.

📚 The evening also featured a book swap, where participants exchanged books and the stories behind them, discovering new reads and new perspectives along the way.

💡 It was only fitting that the event began and ended with a story, reminding us that sometimes the best way to understand the power of storytelling is simply to listen.
