Let's talk compliance vs cooperation.

Two words that seem like synonyms but are actually VERY different concepts. The first is rooted in power and control dynamics while the second is rooted in connection dynamics.

In parenting, compliance is about the parent's authority being central and the child's will or needs or voice being relinquished to the parent's authority. Compliance is submission.

Many people fall into the compliance trap because they were raised in it. "I respected my parents, now it's your turn to respect me" aka "It's my turn to finally feel powerful instead of powerless".

It is also a simpler task. Compliance is subtraction. Two wills minus one will=just one person's needs/perspective/voice to navigate.

Cooperation is addition. One will plus one will = more complexity and also more rich outcomes.

Teaching cooperation is a long term developmental goal. It is about taking the time to work thru everyone's needs without using dominance to decide what matters.

When our children are struggling to follow our rules or schedules etc, our goal is not to get them compliant it is to guide them towards cooperation. Which happens when they witness us cooperating, with them, with our other family members, with other drivers on the road 🚗

The long term goal is to raise humans who know how to interact thru complex dynamics. Who can both speak and listen. Who can compromise when appropriate and who can stand up and hold a boundary when needed. It's not simple, but it is simply worth it.

And you will get looooooks!! Because many people believe that the only way to handle a child's push back is to stomp on their will and force compliance. Remember that you're aiming for a higher level skill than that onlooker was ever given a chance to learn themselves.
