WAEC Revises 2026 Subject Combinations, Restricts Economics for Science and Arts Students

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced major changes to the 2026 WASSCE subject combinations, affecting Science, Arts, and Commercial students nationwide.

Key Changes:

Science students can no longer register for Economics.

Arts students studying Literature, Government, or History are also barred from taking Economics.

Only Commercial/Business students can include Economics in their subject list.

General Requirements:

Students must register for 7–9 subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Three compulsory subjects for all students remain:
✅ English Language
✅ Mathematics
✅ Civic Education

Science Students (2026/2027)
Core subjects: English, Mathematics, Civic Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
Optional subjects: Further Mathematics, Geography, Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, Nigerian Language (Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa)

Arts Students (2026/2027)
Core subjects: English, Mathematics, Civic Education, Literature in English, Government or History, Religious Studies (CRS/IRS), Nigerian Language
Optional subject: Economics (only if permitted under local WAEC guidelines)

Commercial Students (2026/2027)
Core subjects: English, Mathematics, Civic Education, Economics, Accounting, Commerce, Office Practice
Optional subjects: Further Mathematics, Bookkeeping, Agricultural Science or Biology, Nigerian Language

WAEC Trade Subjects (2026/2027)
Students must select at least one trade subject from 35 options to gain practical and entrepreneurial skills. Options include Animal Husbandry, Carpentry & Joinery, Catering Craft Practice, Data Processing, Garment Making, Photography, Welding & Fabrication, GSM Phone Repairs, Marketing, Plumbing, Tourism, and Upholstery.

Subject Selection Guidelines:

Register the three compulsory subjects.

Choose one trade subject.

Pick 2–5 additional subjects from your category.

Total subjects per student: 8–
