Our focus at BNA will be on informing, educating, and empowering our Mothers in order to increase their ability to breastfeed their newborns.

We've seen an increase in diarrhoea in children under the age of five in the last two weeks, leading to dehydration and death.

Please, Mommies of God, if your child is under the age of one year, let your baby be vaccinated for rotavirus in the hospital. It's taken orally. Given 4weeks apart.

🚫Also, When your baby is stooling, avoid antibiotics such as flagyl, as well as diastop and immodium syrup. Normalize going to the hospital and demanding tests. Death due to diarrhoea breaks my heart😩😔..

Let's talk about Diarrhoea in babies AKA stooling

You know Babies can pick germs through contact with unclean food or water or when they touch germy surfaces and then put their hands into their mouths🤦🏽‍♀️.

You can find a lot of different textures, colors, and odors in a baby’s p**py diaper based on what they are eating (breast milk, formula, or solid foods).

The p**p is normally much softer than an adult's, and it’s not uncommon for it to be even softer than usual sometimes. But if it suddenly gets much looser or more watery, and happens more often and in large amounts, it might be diarrhoea, what we all call STOOLING

WHAT IS DIARRHOEA

Diarrhoea is the passage of loose stool more than 4 times and above. It's isn't just a loose stool; it's a watery stool that can even occurs up to 7-12 times a day..

🔔Please Lets Note This.

If you're Exclusively breastfeeding: A breastfed baby's stools are light yellow, soft, or even runny, and they often contain small pieces that look like seeds. Breastfed babies may pass stools with every breastfeeding.
It is totally Normal. ✅

And if you're on exclusive and your baby doesn't p**p up to 1 week but farts a lot, it is absolutely normal ✅.

If your baby is formula-fed: Babies who are formula-fed pass stools that are yellow to tan and about as firm as peanut butter.

Whether you breastfeed or formula-feed your baby, as he grows it's normal for you to see stools less frequently.

EFFECTS OF DIARRHOEA ON BABIES

Diarrhea makes the body lose too much water and minerals called electrolytes. That leads to dehydration. Babies can get dehydrated very quickly, within a few hours or a day after diarrhea starts and it can be very dangerous.

⚠️ Please Visit the Hospital if you notice these signs of dehydration in your baby

1. Peeing less often (fewer wet diapers) Has not urinated in 6 hours if a baby or 12 hours if a child( above age 1)

2. Acting fussy or irritable.

3.Dry mouth

4. No tears when they cry

5. Unusual drowsiness or sluggishness

6. Sunken soft spot on the top of the baby's head.

7. Dryness of the mouth.

8. Fever

9. Stomach Pain

10. Vomiting.

BASIC TREATMENT FOR MILD DEHYDRATION AT HOME BEFORE PROCEEDING TO THE HOSPITAL

When your baby has diarrhoea, still very active, playing and drinking water. The following can be done,

👉 Keep your baby hydrated. Keep breastfeeding if you’re nursing. If you’re formula-feeding, make the formula as normal and feed your baby.

👉The use of electrolyte and Zinc for babies like ORS
These can help replace lost fluids and salts when babies have diarrhea. In your first aid box, should always contain ORS AND ZINC ..

👉ORS is mixed with 1 litre of water and used within 24hrs, then discard

Your baby can take 70-100mls per loose stool.

The use of ZINC TABLET cannot be overemphasized.

📌 1/2 🌗 (half) tablet is used daily for 10 days for babies under 6months.
Just dissolve into 5mls of water.

📌 1(one) tablet is used daily for 10 days for babies above 6months.
Just dissolve into 5mls of water.

📌 Change your baby’s diaper often. Try to keep them as dry as possible to help prevent a diaper rash during this period..
Use your sudocream.

📌 If your little one is eating solid foods, give them bits of foods that may help soothe diarrhea. These include:
-cereal
-pasta
banana..

“Sports drinks are also NOT recommended for young children during diarrhoea,” eg lucozade or ribbena.

“The beauty of oral rehydration products is that they have just enough sugar to allow for the absorption of sodium, potassium, and water without causing more diarrhea".

Please Mommies, you’ll do all these while you proceed to the hospital.

On the issue of using powder on a baby bom, for either a baby boy or girl, it's wrong.

FOR FEMALE BABIES

1.) The use of powder, can cause va**na infection when the powder remains in the diaper and mixes with the urine.

Have u noticed that after a while, powder will cake in the diaper? and some enters into the va**na😥. Powder should NOT be rubbed in places that have openings

2.) It also causes friction, that leads to diaper dermatitis over time.


MOISTURE BARRIER CREAMS

The use of moisture barrier creams, ointments, help to protect the skin due to the frequent wetness on the diaper.

It helps to keep the bum wet and soft against friction from the diaper.

When a baby is pooing more frequently, before you start noticing redness, please use sudo cream or desitin which is highly recommended by the PAN (Paediatric Association of Nigeria)


Also diarrhoea makes the bum red, and over time becomes painful

Mommies Pls when your baby has diarrhoea and the bum is red, Pls reduce the frequent use of wipes to clean the area. Use warm water to always clean and apply sudo cream not powder

Do not leave the bum dry without a barrier cream. If you cannot afford any barrier cream, Use blueseal vaseline or shea butter.

If your baby has a sensitive skin, you can also use sudocream or destitin. It would help
