Master's Degree in Intercultural Studies for Business - ISCAP, Polytechnic of Porto

The MA program in Intercultural Studies for Business opens up new international horizons for students. The course has been approved unconditionally for 6 years by the national agency for accreditation A3Es. With a highly specialized teaching staff, the MA offers innovative courses such as: Chinese (Mandarin) and Arabic Languages and Cultures for Business, Culture and Development, Intercultural Eco

nomic Relations, Entrepreneurship in Culture, Intercultural Communication Technologies, as well as English, French, Spanish, and German Cultures for Business. The MA is fully taught in English, thus allowing for increased collaboration and international mobility. Students may opt for a double degree, in combination with the Masters in Languages and Intercultural Management of the Université d'Artois, France. The MA has a specific ERASMUS mobility protocol with the Hochschule Koblenz, University of Applied Sciences, RheinAhrCampus, Remagen, Germany. The course provides internships with Incubitz � Business Consulting & Entrepreneurship, ACM � High Commissioner for Migrations, the National Association of Women Entrepreneurs, Vida Económica Publishing Group, EDUCOACH � Education and Social Innovation, and several other European partners. This MA is part of RESMI � Higher Education Network for Intercultural Mediation, and contributes to the project-consortium led by P.PORTO The Route � Tourism and Heritage Routes. Graduates will be able to continue their studies at PhD level at the Universities of Vigo, Salamanca, and Santiago de Compostela, due to protocols signed with these prestigious Spanish universities. The target audience is made up of graduates from all P.PORTO schools, as well as professionals from the fields of heritage, arts, communication sciences, social sciences and the humanities, economics, planning, languages, literatures, marketing, management, international trade, local and central administration institutions, public and international relations, tourism, hotel management; publishers and booksellers; translators and interpreters; project managers; socio-cultural mediators; NGO staff; teachers, coaches and mentors. The MA in Intercultural Studies for Business offers indepth training focused on the business world, in order to develop practical, analytical and critical skills for an effective communication between cultures, the profitability of knowledge, and entrepreneurship in the field of culture. The program puts forward an innovative approach to the humanities, in tune with the corporate job market, based on an interdisciplinary approach and the application of new technologies. Graduates will be able to understand, use and monetize methodologies of context analysis and measurement of cultural variables in a business environment. The MA will train professionals capable of autonomous, efficient and integrated performance in intercultural contexts, able to incorporate initiatives for the understanding between cultures into business practices, in line with the new epicentres of economic flows and their agents. Learning outcomes to be developed by students include understanding the relationship between culture, communication and the socioeconomic and political context in the business world; assessing, adapting and (trans)creating information to be communicated; applying multimedia tools; choosing and implementing differentiated business strategies based on nonstandard cultural knowledge; researching and acting in culturally specialized areas. Graduates should be able to use interdisciplinary techniques and expertise to facilitate the implementation of international projects; identify and address the needs of different cultural environments; improve communication between business cultures and deal with intercultural situations effectively, leveraging integration and growth; develop culturally aware and sustainable business ventures; know local customs, their opportunities and obstacles for the global business environment; carry out scientific work with a solid practical, technical, theoretical and methodological basis. In line with a policy of self-employment, the MA in Intercultural Studies for Business views the knowledge of culture as a profitable field, indispensable to any company, both as a tool and as an agent in business and economic growth. The comparative study of cultures allows graduates to adapt and develop professionally in different work contexts. The MA pays special attention to postcolonial cultures and to the current flows of business and decision making centers to China, the Maghreb, the Middle East, Hispano-America, and the Commonwealth, among many others. This MA articulates intercultural studies with economics, communication, politics, history, management, and media arts, to create a professional profile with growing demand in business, publishing, communication, cultural management and political and administrative organizations, in different fields and institutions, within the global context. Classes are concentrated after working hours for 3 semestres + 1 semestre dissertation/project/internship. Although English is the working language of the course, the linguistic component is NOT under assessment (except in Arabic/Chinese (Mandarin) Language and Culture). French, Spanish and German will be used in the respective UCs, with a level of intensity and proficiency to be negotiated with the group. CEI Researcher Sara Rodrigues Awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship

Sara Rodrigues, researcher at the Centre for Intercultural Studies (CEI) and alumna of the Master's in Intercultural Studies for Business at ISCAP–P.PORTO, has been selected for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (MSCA PF), achieving an outstanding evaluation score of 92.2%.
Her postdoctoral project, AURORA – AI for User Engagement, Resilience and Reach in Cultural Organisations, will commence on 1 November 2026 and will be hosted by the Kaunas Faculty of Vilnius University, Lithuania, under the supervision of Prof. Edmundas Jasinskas.
AURORA investigates how cultural organisations can integrate Artificial Intelligence in a critical, ethical and responsible manner while safeguarding authenticity, inclusion and cultural diversity. Focusing primarily on small and medium-sized cultural organisations, the project will examine the perceptions of cultural professionals, artists and audiences, develop AI use scenarios and prototypes through participatory methodologies, and produce practical guidelines to support the responsible adoption of AI technologies across the cultural sector.
The project also includes a research secondment at the DigiMedia Research Centre of the University of Aveiro, under the supervision of Prof. Nelson Zagalo, where Sara Rodrigues will further develop expertise in human-computer interaction, digital innovation and prototype development. In addition, she will undertake a non-academic placement at Casa da Guitarra, providing an opportunity to test and validate the project's outcomes within a real-world cultural environment.

Carina Cerqueira represents CEI at the Science and Innovation 2026 Summit – Prepare the Future
Carina Cerqueira, integrated researcher at the Centre for Intercultural Studies (CEI) of ISCAP-P.PORTO, represented CEI at the Science and Innovation 2026 Summit – Prepare the Future, held on 15–16 July at the Lisbon Congress Centre (FIL).

The event, the first major initiative promoted by AI² - the Agency for Research and Innovation, brought together researchers, higher education institutions, companies, public organisations and European partners to discuss the strategic priorities that will shape the future of research and innovation in Portugal. The programme included plenary sessions, thematic debates and collaborative discussions across key scientific and societal domains.

Participation in this national forum provided an opportunity to engage with current debates on science policy, knowledge transfer, interdisciplinary collaboration and the role of the Social Sciences and Humanities in addressing contemporary societal challenges. It also strengthened opportunities for networking and future research collaborations within the Portuguese and European research ecosystems.

Through this initiative, the Centre for Intercultural Studies stated its commitment to research excellence, innovation, interdisciplinary dialogue and evidence-based public policy.

Ana Margarida Silva co-organises Cost Action SHiFT YRC Summer School 2026 on Career Development for Early-Career Researchers

Ana Margarida Silva, researcher at the Center for Intercultural Studies (CEI) at ISCAP-P. PORTO and alumna of the Master’s in Intercultural Studies for Business, co-organized and participated in the SHiFT COST Action “YRC Summer School 2026: Career Development and Professional Pathways for Early-Career Researchers” held at Politecnico di Torino in Turin, Italy, from July 15 to 17, 2026.

Organized by the SHiFT Young Researchers and Career (YRC) network, the initiative aimed to support PhD candidates and early-career researchers in navigating increasingly complex and non-linear career paths, both within and beyond academia.

The Summer School focused on key questions related to researchers’ professional development, including how to translate academic knowledge and transferable skills into diverse career opportunities and how to transform uncertainty into informed career decision-making. The programme was structured around three interconnected sessions addressing career awareness, transferable skills, grant writing, networking strategies, job search approaches and long-term career planning. Participants engaged in interactive activities designed to strengthen their confidence, identify their skills and explore professional opportunities across academic, industry, NGO and policy sectors. Through a combination of reflective coaching tools, peer exchange and practical career development activities, the programme provided participants with strategies to better understand their professional identities and plan their future pathways.

Ana Margarida Silva hosts international SHiFT workshop on climate-vulnerable territories

CEI researcher, Ana Margarida Silva, organized and hosted the international workshop "Climate-Vulnerable Territories: Memory, Identity and Resilience in Contexts of Environmental Change" within the SHiFT COST Action CA21166 - Social Sciences and Humanities for Transformation and Climate Resilience Young Researchers Council (YRC).
The workshop brought together researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds to explore how communities living in climate-vulnerable territories perceive and respond to environmental change. Discussions centred on the role of memory, identity and place in shaping resilience, while showcasing innovative approaches to interdisciplinary research and collaboration.
The programme featured presentations by:
Elena Todorava (Forest Research Institute, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), "Local knowledge and endogenous potential for enhancing resilience in mountain regions";
Ema Bašić (University of Zadar, Institute of Social Sciences Ivo Pilar), "Cultural and creative industries as drivers of sustainable transformation in rural peripheries: lessons from Croatia's Lika Region";
Irene Christoforidi (Hellenic Mediterranean University), "From ecosystem sustainability to island resilience: safeguarding small and medium-sized islands in climate-vulnerable territories".
In addition to the presentations, participants exchanged experiences on fieldwork, data collection, methodological challenges and interdisciplinary collaboration, fostering dialogue across research communities committed to addressing the social dimensions of climate change.
Congratulations to Ana Margarida Silva for leading this inspiring initiative and contributing to the international exchange of knowledge on climate resilience and environmental change.

Inês Rodrigues e Érica Silva, alumni do Mestrado em Intercultural Studies for Business, no Doutoramento em Estudos Culturais da Universidade de Aveiro

Inês Rodrigues, diplomada com o grau de Mestre em Intercultural Studies for Business, foi admitida no Programa Doutoral em Estudos Culturais da Universidade de Aveiro, dando continuidade ao seu percurso de investigação e aprofundamento científico.

Com esta admissão, Inês junta-se a Érica Silva, também alumni do Mestrado em Intercultural Studies for Business, que integra o mesmo programa doutoral desde o ano passado. Este percurso de ambas evidencia o papel deste mestrado na formação de profissionais que prosseguem carreiras de investigação e reforça o compromisso do curso com a excelência académica.

De alunas a investigadoras, Inês Rodrigues e Érica Silva representam uma nova geração de investigadoras que continuam a aprofundar o conhecimento nas áreas dos estudos culturais, da interculturalidade e da investigação interdisciplinar, contribuindo para o avanço científico e para o desenvolvimento de uma sociedade mais crítica e inclusiva.

CEI at the 5th Congress of the Portuguese and European Networks of Cultural Studies, Leiria, 2–3 July 2026
The Centre for Intercultural Studies (CEI) at ISCAP–P.PORTO participated in the 5th Congress of the Portuguese and European Networks of Cultural Studies (RNEC/ECSN), Culture and Intervention: From Signifying Practices to Future Scenarios, held on 2–3 July 2026 at Leiria Castle and the School of Education and Social Sciences of the Polytechnic University of Leiria.
CEI was represented by Carina Cerqueira, who presented the paper "Gender, Power and Performative Narratives in Literary and Digital Cultures", and by Clara Sarmento, who presented "Ecologies of Resistance: Decolonising Cultural Heritage through the Lens of the Ria de Aveiro".
In addition to presenting her paper, Clara Sarmento took part in the roundtable "(Re)imagining Cultural Studies: Between Innovations and Future Scenarios", contributing to discussions on the current challenges and future directions of the field. At the conclusion of the congress, she also represented P.PORTO at the final meetings of the Portuguese and European Networks of Cultural Studies, where participants discussed strategic priorities and approved the Leiria Charter.

Results just announced: CEI joins the winning consortium of the Erasmus Mundus Design Measures programme with the project ATLAS-S
The results have just been announced, and the Centre for Intercultural Studies (CEI) at ISCAP–P.Porto is part of the consortium of the successful project ATLAS-S – CO-creation of a Transdisciplinary Master's Degree “Advanced Technology, Learning, Art & Science for and with Society”, selected under the ERASMUS-EDU-2026-EMJM-DESIGN (Erasmus Mundus Design Measures) call.
The 15-month project (No. 101325774) received an excellent evaluation score of 87/100 and is coordinated by the University of Seville, bringing together partner institutions from Austria, Slovakia, and Portugal.
Within the consortium, CEI will contribute its recognised expertise in intercultural studies by integrating curricular units already offered within the Master's in Intercultural Studies for Business, further enhancing ISCAP–P.Porto's international academic offer.
This achievement consolidates CEI's international engagement, reinforcing its contribution to innovative, interdisciplinary, and transnational higher education initiatives while expanding its participation in European academic networks.

CEI’s researcher Gabriel Lourenço participates in EIND COST Action’s workshop Cultural Heritage and Visual Representations of India
The Centre for Intercultural Studies’ (CEI) young researcher Gabriel Lourenço participated in the international workshop Cultural Heritage and Visual Representations of India, held in Porto and co-organised by COST Action CA23144 ESIND – Europe’s Representations of India: Texts, Images, and Encounters and ID-SCAPES (ERC Consolidator Grant 101125057).
Bringing together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds, the event explored the visual cultures of the Indian subcontinent through critical perspectives on colonial knowledge production, artistic exchange, and global cultural heritage.
Across three intensive days, participants engaged with topics including the circulation of European prints in South Asia, urban cartography and methods for reading historical cityscapes, and photographic collections documenting India's cultural heritage and Portuguese influence. Practical workshops also challenged participants to develop curatorial concepts for exhibitions based on historical photographic archives.
The programme concluded with a seminar featuring paper presentations introduced by keynote lectures from Ines G. Županov (CNRS, Paris) and Attilio Petruccioli, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on visual representations, heritage, and transcultural histories.
Gabriel Lourenço's participation reflects the Centre for Intercultural Studies' commitment to international research networks and to advancing critical approaches to cultural heritage, visual studies, and intercultural exchange.
