✨ During the last Wednesdays of this month, our NSSLHA-RCM team had the privilege of volunteering at the Down Syndrome Foundation of Puerto Rico. Part of our members joined a cooking workshop that helps individuals with Down syndrome build independence, confidence, and life skills through the joy of cooking. 🍳💛
We left inspired by their enthusiasm, creativity, and love for learning — reminders of why we do what we do. 🌟
Maybe we’ll be back soon… or maybe sooner than you think 😏👀
A huge shoutout to our amazing treasurer, Astrid, who made this experience possible! 🤍👏

✨ October is AAC Awareness Month! ✨
Communication is more than words—it is connection, identity, autonomy, and participation. For many individuals, spoken words are not their only pathway to expression. This is where Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) becomes a bridge, breaking barriers and reminding us that every human being deserves to be heard.
As future Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists, we recognize that our role extends beyond clinical techniques or devices. It is about advocating for the fundamental human right of communication in all its forms. Every device, every gesture, every symbol, and every look carries meaning. Each represents a unique voice that deserves respect.
This month, we celebrate the diversity of communication and reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive world—one where no one is left without a voice. Because communication is not a privilege, it is a human right. 🗣️💜

🌟 Empowering Future Clinicians Through Advocacy! 🌟
Our chapter had the opportunity to attend the conference “Rights, Needs, and Challenges in Health Services for the Deaf Community in Puerto Rico” presented by Josué García-Torres, MRC, Doctoral Intern in Audiology. 👂🎓
As future speech-language pathologists and audiologists, this experience reminded us of the critical role we play in advocating for accessible and equitable health care. We gained valuable insights into the barriers the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community faces and how we can work to break them down — from improving communication access to promoting policies that protect their rights.
This knowledge strengthens our commitment to providing culturally and linguistically appropriate care, while also using our voices to influence change at both the clinical and legislative levels. 💜🤟

✨ Our First Meeting of the Year! ✨
Back in August, we hosted our very first meeting as a chapter! 🌟 During this session, we introduced our 2025-2026 Executive Board, talked about what NSSLHA is all about, and shared the many benefits of being a member. Students also got the chance to learn about upcoming opportunities and how to get involved in shaping our community of future speech-language pathologists and audiologists. 💬👂
We’re so excited for everything this year has in store — this is just the beginning! ✨
