How ironic that is not only Black History Month, but it is heart health month in addition to the focus on women’s heart health and ChatGPT makes this cute character of me. Let this be my timeline reminder to stay up-to-date with your doctors appointment and make sure you understand your heart risks including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, significant family, history, diabetes, etc 💕🫀🫀 — signed your fav NP 🎀

WOMEN, the backbone of the family.
Black women, SACRIFICIAL backbone of the family
Since our history, we often have put the well-being of others before ourselves.
Our children. Our husbands. Our parents. Our loved ones.
But what about you?
When was your last regular visit? When was your last mammogram?

Black women often have trouble putting THEIR healthcare first because they need to make sure everyone else is taken care of. In addition to this mindset, they are often at a disadvantage in healthcare due to the lack of awareness of disease processes in this population. Black women are receiving detrimental diagnoses for breast cancer at higher rates than any other population because detection is happening TOO late. We cannot wait until we are 50 years old to start getting mammograms.

As a Nurse, I know what It feels like to not put yourself first. I have sacrificed mealtime and healthy habits all for my job. When I started to notice a decline in my physical health as a 28-year-old, I knew I could not continue to treat myself like this. Preaching to the choir about good eating habits, annual visits, and exercise while neglecting my own to make sure my patients were taken care of.

How can you pour from an empty cup? How can you take care of others if you are not well first?

I want women of all kinds, but especially BLACK women to prioritize their health. If nobody else will advocate for us, we should advocate for OURSELVES. If you have a family history of breast cancer or are 40 y/o and older, ask your healthcare provider about recommendations for your next mammogram! Need a healthcare provider? Do your research…just like you do to find the perfect hair stylist and the perfect makeup artist. Your health is just as important! IT’S A PRIORITY!

Take control of your health and if any of you would like to share your journey below feel free to do so. Your story in healthcare can uplift and encourage others. recently did this sharing her experience with her first mammogram this year.
