A new article by Dr Anna Cichecka from the Institute of Sociology, University of Wrocław, has just been published in “Africa Review”, an international journal focusing on African Studies:

Cichecka, A. (2026). “Balancing Promise and Challenge: Rethinking Gender Equality Initiatives within the Samoa Agreement.” Africa Review (online first).

The article critically examines the place of gender equality within the Samoa Agreement, highlighting both the potential of the new arrangements and their limitations.

👋 Buddy Space at the Institute of Sociology!

Are you new to the Institute of Sociology and Wrocław and would like to have someone by your side while you are finding your way around?

Or do you already know the Institute, the University of Wrocław, or the city and would like to share your experience with someone who has just arrived?

Either way — join Buddy Space!

Buddy Space is a new initiative of the Institute of Sociology and the Welcome Centre (Faculty of Social Sciences), bringing newcomers and more experienced students together.

🤝 How does it work?

Newcomers will be paired with local buddies who can help with questions that come up while settling in. Buddies do not need to know everything. They can share what they know and help newcomers find the right person or place when more information is needed.

💬 Buddy Space is about more than finding the right classroom or knowing whom to contact.

During the winter semester 2026, we will also organise gatherings for newcomers and local buddies. Their format may vary depending on students’ interests — from informal meetings to discussions, workshops, and other activities. Most importantly, it is the students themselves who will shape this space by bringing in the topics, questions, and interests they would like to explore together.

🌱 Students who join as local buddies will participate on the basis of a volunteer agreement and, after the semester, receive a certificate confirming their volunteer work.

On April 21, the campus of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Wrocław, located at 3 Koszarowa Street, was filled with a truly spring-like atmosphere. 🌸

The Faculty authorities, together with the Faculty Student Council, organised Hydrangea Day, combined with the symbolic opening of the newly renovated car park 🚗. The event was also attended by the University’s Rectorate authorities and friends of the Faculty 🫂.

The new car park offers around 250 spaces (including 10 designated for people with disabilities), as well as new pavements, bicycle stands, and benches. At the same time, the renovation of Koszarowa Street is nearing completion, making access to the increasingly beautiful campus even more convenient 🚴‍♂️.

From now on, 21 April will be associated not only with flowers, but also with the symbolic completion of an important stage of transformation 🌿
