🛠 DESIGN REWIND — KOTY(dż) 2023 💚

Back to another project from the 2023 edition — this time by a group led by Atelier Starzak Strebicki 🐈

Working in the ROD Jutrzenka allotment gardens in Poznań, the team designed Chatie — a complex of three cat houses located behind the modernist administration building of the gardens. The name combines the Polish word chata (shack) and the French chat (cat) 💚

The shelters were designed based on observations of both cats and their caretakers — with natural insulation, double walls, straw filling and soft rounded shapes helping animals adapt to their new habitat. The design also subtly references modernist architecture through simplicity, versatility and intuitive use.

And one extra thing — at the request of local allotment gardeners, the group also designed a cat feeding table inspired by the architecture of nearby garden houses 🌿

Last tutors announcement for KOTY(dż) 2026 💚

Meet the team behind CoLab Berlin / TU Berlin 🛠🌿

CoLab is a collaborative design laboratory exploring the space between design processes, prototyping, digital tools and collective ways of working. Based at TU Berlin, the studio is part of an international network connecting Berlin and Madrid.

This year one of the workshop groups will be led by:

— Dr. Gaizka Altuna — researcher and teaching staff at TU Berlin, interested in architectural design informed by prototyping, digital technologies and collaborative processes.

— Mirza Vranjaković — architect based in Berlin, founder of STADTGRAD, with professional and academic experience across Istanbul, Madrid, Basel and Berlin.

We’re super excited to have them join KOTY(dż) this year and can’t wait to see what happens when collaborative design meets free-living cats 🐈✨

🛠 DESIGN REWIND — KOTY(dż) 2023 💚

Another project from the 2023 edition — this time by a group led by KOBRA studio 🐈

Working with the Ugory Care Home in Poznań, the team designed two cat shelters placed in the facility’s garden — creating spaces for free-living cats while also encouraging residents to spend more time outdoors 🌿

Rocket 🚀 — a shelter for one cat, inspired by a pyramid form and lifted above the ground.

Rysy ⛰ — a shelter for two cats, inspired by Poland’s highest mountain peak and built from a wooden triangular grid.
