A boy or a girl? https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1DNDM9ah3k/

What would happen if your opening a book from medieval England and discovering that someone had written about a room full of "girls"—only to realize they weren't talking about daughters at all. Some of those "girls" were boys.

For centuries, the English word **girl** had nothing to do with s*x. It simply meant a young child. If people needed to be more specific, they added another word. A boy might be called a "knave girl," while a girl could be a **"gay girl."** The word *gay* simply meant cheerful or carefree, and *knave* originally meant a boy or servant long before it became an insult.

Language, however, has a way of quietly rewriting history.

By the late 1400s, the meaning of **girl** began to narrow until it referred almost exclusively to female children. Boys gradually lost the label altogether, becoming simply **boys** or **knave children**, while girls were also described as **maiden children** in certain contexts. No king announced the change. No law demanded it. The language simply drifted, generation by generation, until almost everyone forgot it had ever been different.

Today, it sounds almost unbelievable that medieval parents could have referred to their sons as "girls" without anyone raising an eyebrow. Yet surviving documents show that words we assume have always meant the same thing often carried completely different meanings centuries ago.

It's a reminder that history doesn't just change our customs—it changes the words we use to describe ourselves. Somewhere in medieval England, a mother called for her "girls," and both her son and daughter came running. The most familiar words can hide the most unexpected histories, waiting centuries for someone to notice them again.

A polite conversation usually begins with a greeting or a warm, welcoming opening, for example: "Nice to meet you," "I'm (Name)," or "I don't think we've met yet".
What comes next is also very important:
