Earth intercepts approximately 1.7 × 10¹⁷W (≈ 173PW) of solar power continuously at the top of the atmosphere (solar constant ≈ 1361 W/m² times Earth’s cross-sectional area). The Moon’s disk intercepts a tiny fraction of the sunlight that would otherwise reach Earth:
• Approximate Moon cross-section: ~10¹³ m².
• Typical top-of-atmosphere irradiance: ~1,300–1,400W/m².
• Effective duration while a significant shadow crosses Earth: on the order of a few hours (partial phases lasted ~4+ hours from first to last contact; the deepest effects are shorter).
So if we want to estimate the energy lost, it’ll look something like this: ~1400W/m² x 10¹³m² x ~3h ≈ 10²⁰J

Global electricity generation is currently on the order of ~30,000 TWh/year ≈ 1.08 × 10²⁰ J, so the blocked solar energy is comparable to roughly one year’s worldwide electricity output.
Relative to Earth’s total annual absorbed solar energy (~3–4 × 10²⁴ J), the deficit is tiny (∼0.002–0.003 %). It causes brief local cooling of a few °C along the path but has negligible lasting effect on global temperature or the planetary energy balance.
