Many young girls dream of becoming a prima ballerina, but few make it all the way to the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow.
HARPER ORTLIEB, a 15-year-old American, left her small town in Oregon to follow her dream. SHE'S ONE OF THE RARE FOREIGNERS TO BE PART OF THE ACADEMY'S REGULAR RUSSSIAN PROGRAMME.
“I’m very honoured and humbled to have been accepted here. I have learnt so much just in the couple of months I have been here. There’s corrections every single day. Point your foot harder, turn out more … and we are going to get that for the rest of our life, even when we are professional,” Ortlieb says.

The Bolshoi Ballet Academy (BBA), one of the oldest and most established schools for classical ballet training, has produced numerous world-class dancers, teachers, and choreographers. With its 240-year history, the Academy is steeped in a rich cultural tradition with a strong curriculum and a pedagogy that focuses on strength, musicality, clarity, and personal expression. Most of the Principal Dancers of the Bolshoi Ballet graduated from the Academy and are among the leading dancers in the world today. Other current alumni include Principal Dancers, Artistic Directors, top ballet educators and scholars in the world. Part II describes the stage action - the steps, gestures and the meanings they express - and analyses the interpretation of the roles. The book concludes with a survey of dancers who won fame for their performances as Giselle and as Albrecht.
