How "Two" evolved across the different languages of the Indo-European family
In order to name the unknown elements at his time, Mendeleev used the prefixes eka-, dvi- and tri-, from the Sanskrit names of digits 1, 2, and 3. For example, germanium was called eka-silicon until its discovery in 1886, and rhenium was called dvi-manganese before its discovery in 1926.
What is interesting is that these root words are not unique to Sanskrit. All children of the Indo-European family have their words derived from the same mother, Proto Indo European. As an example to illustrate this, here is a chart [originally created by a Reddit user, remixed by us] that illustrates what 2 is called in different languages of this family.
The original root word was dwoh from which all forms emerged. The implication is stronger if you consider how other languages, not part of this family call 2 - iki (Turkish), èjì (Yoruba), ni (Japanese), kaksi (Finnish), Rendu (Telugu), Irandu (Tamil), evidently different from the root word "dwoh"
