What if every time your muscles or tissue were damaged, your body turned it into bone?

Yes, this is possible.A mutation in one gene called ACVR1 is responsible for this, and the disease it causes is called FOP - fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

The disease was first officially described in 1692 under a different name - myositis ossificans progressiva. The first comprehensive publication on the subject, which described more than 100 cases, was not written until 1918. In 1970, the name of the disease was changed to fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva because it was discovered that the disease affects not only muscles, but also all soft tissues.

The first symptoms of the disease are already visible in newborns - their thumbs and toes are bowed or too short.There is also underdevelopment and synostosis of the phalanges of the hands.

Further symptoms usually appear in the first 10 years of life. They most often affect the spine, the rim of the upper and lower limbs, making it difficult to move. Often in its early stages, the disease can be mistaken for cancer because the foci of disease can resemble tumors. Eventually, the disease causes ossification of large joints, resulting in immobilization.

The examination of burnt bone remains is not an easy task. The problem is not only the incineration of the remains, which makes it impossible to use all the diagnostic features for identification, but also the change in the shape and size of the bones, which occurs under the influence of high temperature on the bone.

The change in size and shape of bones is caused by the burning of their organic components, including collagen, which is part of the osteons. During the burning process the osteons shrink and the diameter of the Haversian systems decreases, which means that the fastest deformation occurs in those parts of the bone that are made of compact bone tissue, like the shafts of long bones. Spongy bone tissue reacts completely differently to temperature - elements of the skeleton that are made up of it (epiphyses of long bones, flat bones) do not change shape, they only change size.

Examination of burned remains is difficult. It takes experience and good anatomy skills, but sometimes even this is not enough. Sometimes neither age nor s*x can be determined.
