I am in Kyrgyzstan training young people from Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan to be media savvy. The media camp for Soros Foundation is taking palce at Issyk Kul - the big mountain lake resort.

The editing of a piece I was asked to write for a contractor in Central Asia resulted in the excising of all instances of the word "shashlik". After I wrote a dry, BBC-style newsletter item, I was asked to write something more juicy. I thought "shashlik" would be just the thing. But it turned out to be off the menu.

The best shashlik one can get is probably in Turkmenistan - I had about two a day every day I was in Ashgabat training journalists there for a UNDP programme on human rights
