🇵🇱 What’s a Polish word that I can’t stop using? 🇬🇧

After nearly eight years in Poland, there are certain Polish words that have somehow become part of my everyday vocabulary.

“No to...”
I don’t even know exactly what it means half the time anymore. 😂 But somehow it works in almost every situation.

“Dobra.”
Probably one of the first words every foreigner learns. And one of the most useful!

“Ekstra.”
This is honestly one of my favourite Polish words. I love how expressive it is. And I absolutely love hearing Polish people say “ekstra!” 😄
It just sounds so enthusiastic.

And then there’s...

“Masakra.”
What an incredible word. 😂
Something is awful? Masakra.
Something is terrible? Masakra.
Your day has completely fallen apart? MASAKRA.
It’s such an expressive way of describing something that’s gone horribly wrong.

I’ve also started using “kurczę”, “spoko”, and “właśnie” without even thinking about it.

At this point, I’m not sure whether I’m learning Polish...
or Polish is slowly taking over my English. 😂🇵🇱

🇵🇱 One of the best things about Poland 🇵🇱

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate most about living in Poland is how easy it is to escape.

You can be surrounded by people, noise and everyday life one minute... and then, a short walk or run later, you can find yourself completely alone in nature. 🌄

Sometimes I don’t need anything complicated. Just a sunny afternoon, a sunset, a quiet path and some time to clear my head.

There’s something about being surrounded by trees, mountains, fields and open skies that reminds you to slow down and breathe.

And perhaps the strangest thing is that this isn’t my own country.

I’m British. England will always be home in its own way.

But after nearly eight years in Poland, I’ve realised that home isn’t necessarily the place you were born. Sometimes it’s the place where you find peace.
And Poland has given me plenty of that. ❤️🇵🇱

What is the perfect Polish Sunday? 🇵🇱☀️

I’ve lived in Poland for eight years, and I still don’t know if I’m doing Sundays right. 😂

So what is it that Polish people like to do most on a Sunday?

Is it a peaceful walk in the woods? 🌲

A big Sunday lunch with the family? 🍲

Staying in bed and being gloriously lazy? 😴

From my perspective, there seems to be another very important Polish Sunday tradition: doing absolutely everything around the house.
There’s always something to fix, clean, build, paint, rearrange or improve.

And then there’s the lawn. 🌱
Because apparently Sunday is the perfect day to mow it, trim it, edge it, strim it… and, if necessary, personally remove every single blade of grass from existence with a hedge trimmer.
Even though… lawn mowers are still available. 😂

So, what are people up to today on this lovely sunny Sunday?

Are you out enjoying nature? Having lunch with the family? Doing jobs around the house?

How do British people get out of something they don’t want to do? 🇬🇧😂

British people have perfected the art of saying no without actually saying no.

Instead of simply saying “I don’t want to go”, we’ll give you a beautifully vague response that keeps the possibility of going alive for approximately three weeks. 😂

🇬🇧 “I might pop down.”
🇬🇧 “I’ll drop you a text.”
🇬🇧 “I’ll see how I feel.”
🇬🇧 “Sounds interesting…”
🇬🇧 “I’ll have to see what I’m up to.”
🇬🇧 “Let’s play it by ear.”
🇬🇧 “What time are you going?”
🇬🇧 “Let me check the diary.”
🇬🇧 “Put me down as a maybe.”
🇬🇧 “Send me the details.”
🇬🇧 “I might have to move a few things around.”
🇬🇧 “Ah… if you’d have said any other day.” 😭

And the funniest thing is… everyone knows exactly what these phrases mean.

“Sounds interesting” = Absolutely not.

“Let me check the diary” = I’m going to forget about this.

“Let’s play it by ear” = I have no intention of committing.

“Put me down as a maybe” = That’s a no.

But now I’m curious…

Tragic Tinder Date 2.0 😂

I thought I was having a pretty normal Tinder date.

We were having a drink, chatting, getting along nicely… and then about 20 minutes in, she looked at me and asked:

“What’s your credit score?”
I genuinely thought I’d misheard her. 😂

So I asked, “Is that… normal first-date conversation?”

Apparently, yes.

She explained that she wanted to get engaged, get married, have a baby AND buy a house within the next two years — and she expected the man to fund all of it.

I mean… I was expecting “What do you do for fun?”

Not “Can I see your financial history?” 😭

Needless to say, that was a pretty big red flag for me.

And honestly, I’ve been on quite a few dates where the expectation seems to be that the man should start buying things almost immediately.

Being a foreigner in Poland can sometimes make this even more interesting, because apparently being British means people occasionally assume you’re secretly sitting on a mountain of cash and are looking for someone to spend it on. 😂

First date: drinks.
Second date: credit check.
Third date: mortgage application.

Maybe I got off Tinder just in time. 😂

Where to get breakfast in Wrocław? 🥞🇵🇱

I recently went to Atelier Cafe in Wrocław for breakfast, and honestly, it was a beautiful experience. 🥰

The pancakes were absolutely delicious, and I also tried their Relax Smoothie — apparently it’s designed to chase away all your fears and anxiety… and, you know what? It did exactly that. 😂

The only thing I wasn’t completely convinced by was the music selection. Let’s just say… the pancakes were considerably better than the playlist. 😅🎶

But overall, I absolutely loved it. Great food, a lovely atmosphere and a seriously good way to start the day.

Now I’m curious…

Weird British Small Talk 🇬🇧😂

One of the weirdest types of British small talk is what I like to call “stating the obvious.”
You could be leaving the house, feeling unusually chatty, and walk past your neighbour mowing the lawn:

“Mowing the lawn?”
“Yep.”
“Nice day for it.”
“Yep.”

And that’s it. Conversation over. 😂

Or you bump into someone you know in the shops:

“Doing a bit of shopping?”
“Yep.”
“How’s the wife?”
“Alright.”

Brilliant. Deep conversation. 😂

Or you walk into your local pub and see a mate having a beer:

“Having a beer?”
“Yep.”
“Me too.”

What are we doing?! 😂

It’s this bizarre British habit of having conversations where everyone already knows the answer, but we still ask the question anyway.

And somehow, this counts as perfectly normal social interaction in Britain.

What is it that foreigners always get wrong about Poland? 🇵🇱

And I don’t mean facts or statistics. I’m talking about culture, expectations, stereotypes and those little misconceptions people have before they actually spend time here.

When I first moved to Poland, some of the people I was working with in London genuinely suggested that people would forget about me if I moved to a country like Poland.

I remember thinking how incredibly pretentious that idea was — as if moving to Poland meant disappearing off the face of the earth or moving somewhere that wasn’t a nice place to live.

And after living here, I can tell you... Poland is a really bloody nice place to live. 😂

There are obviously things that surprised me, things I misunderstood before moving here, and plenty of stereotypes that turned out to be completely wrong.

So I’m curious...

How is it obvious I’m British even when speaking Polish? 🇬🇧🇵🇱

Apparently... because I apologise too much. 😂
I say “przepraszam” everywhere I go, even when I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong.

Then, every time I buy something in Żabka, it’s:
“Proszę... proszę... dziękuję... dziękujemy... dziękuję ślicznie...”

By the time I’ve left the shop, I’ve probably thanked the cashier five times.

My Polish friends always laugh and tell me, “You’re far too polite to be Polish.” Apparently, it’s obvious I’m British... even when I’m speaking Polish. 🇬🇧😂

Maybe some habits are impossible to lose!

⚠️ If Poland came with a warning label, what would it be? 🇵🇱

The more time I spend living in Poland, the more I feel like the country should come with a few warnings before you visit... 😅

⚠️ You will judge every bakery you visit for the rest of your life.
⚠️ One trip to Żabka will somehow become three trips a day.
⚠️ You will discover there are more types of pierogi than you ever thought possible.
⚠️ Your weekend plans may unexpectedly involve a forest.
⚠️ Someone’s babcia will try to feed you until you can’t move.
⚠️ You will learn that taking your shoes off isn’t optional.
⚠️ You’ll start checking the weather... and still get caught in a thunderstorm.
⚠️ You will never again think a playground is “just a playground.”
⚠️ You’ll begin measuring distances in “it’s only 20 minutes by car.”
⚠️ You’ll realise every family has a different opinion on the best pierogi.
⚠️ You’ll find yourself saying “kurczę” even if you promised yourself you wouldn’t.
⚠️ You may become strangely excited by fresh jagodzianki when they’re in season.
⚠️ You’ll stop walking past bakeries... because the smell always wins.
⚠️ You’ll learn that saying “just one more slice of cake” rarely means just one.
⚠️ You’ll start planning weekends around lakes, mountains, or forests.
