EV Road Trip Planning in Pakistan – A Reality Check

The situation on the M2 today is a textbook reminder that EV road trip planning in Pakistan requires a different mindset than conventional fuel travel.

Key Lessons from Today's M2 Incident:
A commuter left Islamabad this morning confident that Bhera's 3–4 chargers would be available — all were OUT OF ORDER. They then diverted to Pindi Bhattian, only to find NO electricity due to load-shedding. By 11:40am, they were still stranded.

Before You Leave — Plan Like a Mission

1. Never assume, always verify:
Call ahead to confirm charger operational status. Don't rely on app listings — they are often outdated in Pakistan.

2. Treat charging stops like fuel reserves, not convenience:
Identify your primary, secondary, and emergency charging points before departure. If one fails, you need a fallback already mapped.

3. Account for load-shedding schedules:
Pakistan's load-shedding is unpredictable and hits motorway service areas too. Avoid planning arrival at charging points during peak outage hours where possible.

4. Charge to maximum before departure:
Never start a long motorway run below full charge, especially in summer heat when battery performance drops.

5. Carry a contingency — time and contact:
Know the nearest town with commercial electricity (hotels, petrol stations with generators) along your route.

6. Heat degrades range:
In June temperatures, EV range can drop noticeably. Adjust your range estimates (EPA) downward by 10–15% in peak summer.

Our four manikins are sharing their experiences after the CPR session.

CPR Manikin # 1: Finally, a break. My sternum can't take another compression cycle. Please take a good long break.

CPR Manikin # 2: Speak for yourself. I've been pronounced dead and revived 47 times today.

CPR Manikin # 3: At least they're compressing at the correct depth now.

CPR Manikin # 4: The first group was trying to perform CPR on my neck.

During dust storms, curiosity can be dangerous. Avoid gathering outside to watch the weather. The safest place is indoors until visibility and wind conditions improve.

🚶 Pedestrians
- Seek shelter inside a solid building immediately.
- Avoid walking near walls, signboards, construction sites, trees, and electric poles.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a mask or cloth to reduce dust inhalation.
- Protect your eyes with glasses or goggles if available.
- Do not attempt to cross roads when visibility is severely reduced.

🏍 Motorcycle & Bicycle Riders:
- Stop riding and move to a safe sheltered location.
- Strong crosswinds can throw riders off balance.
- Use headlights and hazard lights if caught on the road.
- Wear eye protection and cover your face.
- Avoid stopping under trees, billboards, or power lines.

🛺 Rickshaw Passengers:
- Ask the driver to pull over in a safe area away from traffic.
- Keep your hands and head inside the vehicle.
- Use a cloth or mask to reduce dust exposure.
- If visibility becomes near zero, wait until conditions improve.

🚗 Car Drivers and Passengers:
- Reduce speed immediately.
- Turn on headlights; avoid using high beams in dense dust.
- If visibility becomes unsafe, pull completely off the roadway.
- Keep windows closed and use air recirculation.
- Remain seat-belted and avoid unnecessary travel until the storm passes.

🏪 Shopkeepers and Street Vendors:
- Secure loose items, displays, umbrellas, and signage.
- Move customers indoors if possible.
- Close shutters and doors to reduce dust entry.
- Stay clear of glass fronts that may shatter due to flying debris.

🏢 Residents and Building Occupants:
- Stay indoors and close doors and windows.
- Keep children away from rooftops and balconies.
- Unplug sensitive electrical equipment if severe weather threatens power systems.
- Monitor official weather and emergency advisories.

After the Storm:
- Watch for fallen power lines, damaged structures, and debris.
- Seek medical attention for breathing problems, eye injuries, or trauma.
- Check on children, older adults, and people with respiratory illnesses.

🫀 Don't Hesitate. Every Second Counts.

When someone collapses and their heart stops, immediate CPR can double or triple their chances of survival.

Yet studies show that women are significantly less likely to receive CPR from bystanders than men — not just in Pakistan, but across the world. The reasons are often hesitation, fear of touching the chest, or uncertainty about causing harm.

Here is the truth:
- Doing CPR imperfectly is infinitely better than not doing it at all
- You cannot make things worse — the person's heart has already stopped
- Removing or adjusting clothing is acceptable and necessary to save a life
- CPR has no gender. A stopped heart needs compression.

If you witness someone collapse:
- Call for help immediately
- Start chest compressions — hard and fast
- Do not stop until help arrives

Learn CPR. Overcome hesitation. Save a life — regardless of who is in front of you.

Speed is one of the leading causes of fatal road accidents.
- Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases crash severity
- Rollover crashes — like the one shown — are strongly associated with excessive speed
- Following speed limits is not just a legal obligation, it is a civic and moral responsibility

A responsible driver protects not only themselves but every other road user around them. Slow down. Arrive alive.

The bottle shown is from the Japanese brand Suntory (“Suntory Natural Water” / サントリー天然水). The company has publicly discussed reducing packaging materials and making bottles more environmentally friendly, including:
using ultra-thin plastic labels,
reducing PET plastic weight,
introducing partially plant-based bottles,
and even selling some “label-less” bottles in Japan.
