GIKI Mathematics Society is aimed at cultivating the practices of research among students so that they contribute to the Mathematical Sciences and their applications. We are gathering yo
ung minds, encouraging them to apply their creativity, imagination and passion on the underlying Mathematics waiting for them to explore and benefit the community at large. We aim to promote Mathematical expression and its application to numerous fields by presenting them with new thoughts and ideas. and APMO is one of our key initial steps to fulfill our such aims. Young Researcher's Conference 2012:
YRC 2012 is an initiative in the same direction. The objective of the conference is to bring together both well established and emerging young researchers from around the world. The conference aims to provide a forum for leading experts and young researchers to discuss recent progress in pure and applied mathematics, thereby providing new directions for mathematical sciences in various fields.
All Pakistan Mathematics Olympiad comprises of the following modules:
• MENSA IQ Test (Compulsory for all participants)
• Journey Through Genius
• Invent the Equation
• Mathematical Modeling
• Mind Trap
• Games Night (free for all participants)
• Discovery Night (free for all participants)
Module: MENSA IQ Test:
GMS is proud to co-organize the MENSA IQ Test through collaboration of MENSA Pakistan to provide the opportunity to all participants to test their cognitive intelligence and get a chance to be a part of the MENSA Pakistan team. IQ – intelligence quotient – is a number derived from a set of standardized tests developed to measure a person’s cognitive abilities (“intelligence” ) in relation to their age group. An IQ test does not measure intelligence the way a ruler measures height (absolutely), but rather the way a race measures speed (relatively); IQ is described as a “quotient” because, originally, it represented the ratio between a person’s “mental age” and actual chronological age.nsa? Mensa is an international high IQ society. Its only qualification for membership is a score in the top 2% of the general population on a standardized intelligence test. “Mensa” comes from Latin, and has triple meanings: mind, table, month, implying a monthly meeting of great minds around a table. The name stands for a round-table society, where race, color, creed, national origin, age, politics, educational or social background are irrelevant. Module: Journey Through Genius:
This module comprises a 24-hour paper, a round based on riddles and pattern solving and finally a Math-Kasoty round. The details are listed below:
1. 24-hour Research Paper: The teams will be provided with a 24-hours time-period to solve a paper related purely to mathematics. The purpose is to get a detailed figure of the mathematical and logical insight the participants possess and to examine their resourcefulness and research capabilities.
2. Solve the Riddle: Solving riddles and patterns is a dynamic art, particularly useful in the study of pure mathematics. Teams will have to unravel different kinds of interesting puzzles and logic problems. Accuracy, approach, time duration all shall be included in judgment.
3. Math Kasoty - Reach the Genius: The selected teams from previous rounds will be provided with certain topics related to mathematics. They will be allowed to choose the topic and the questions will be asked related to the selected topic only. The highest scoring team will be declared as the winner. Module: Invent the Equation:
GMS presents “Invent the Equation” to test your knowledge, creativity and intuition all in one package. This module involves application of any graphical software such as Microsoft Math 2007 to develop an interesting “function” or “equation”. Students can use techniques like intersection of equations, scaling, translation etc to develop a 3D or 2D geometric surface/figure that they can explain from the very root. Students who have studied surfaces and 3D graphing techniques can have a leading edge in this event. As boring as it may seem in the first glance, we guarantee you it is going to be a majorly interesting part of the event. Module: Mathematical Modeling:
A team of three members chooses one of two "real-world" problems, builds a mathematical model, obtains a solution based on it, and writes a detailed paper (proving the feasibility of the team's model and solution) - all this in the space of less than 3 days! The judgment will be based on the best idea/solution presented. Here you will get a glimpse of what applied mathematicians do outside of academia. The problems are taken from any field of science, engineering, and industry. Recent problems included:
• Estimating the maximum "safe" number of people for a given type of public
facility
• Studying hunting strategies for velociraptor dinosaurs based on fossil data
• Comparing various grading policies for fighting the "grade inflation"
• Providing guidelines for selecting the design of bicycle wheels to optimize the
performance on a given track and
• Considering the effects of different airline overbooking strategies on the
overall profitability. Module:Mind Trap
This module comprises of two teams who try to solve logical riddles and move on a board (which actually is a paper from a block with a "racing track"). The team who reaches the exit first wins the round. Each time a team comes up with the right solution they will be allowed to throw a dice and move steps as shown on dice. Coming across a ditch on the path the players will be asked to answer a rapid question in a certain time duration. If the team answers correctly, it will cross the ditch otherwise it would have to retain its previous position. Each team can have up to a maximum of 3 members. Questions will be related to logic, geometry, puzzles, math, IQ and general knowledge.

Prof. Dr. Ghulam Shabbir has breathed his last today.
It is indeed a great loss as we are deprived of a great teacher and a very lovely person. He has left a void no one can fill.
A good soul has passed on, a good man has gone up to heaven.

Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani has become the first woman to ever win the Fields Medal -- known as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics" -- since the award was established in 1936. The Stanford mathematics professor was awarded the prestigious honor for her contributions to the fields of geometry and dynamical systems.
In Quanta Magazine, Mirzakhani describes how she decided from a young age that she wanted to do something great with her life. As a young child, she loved reading and would tell herself stories about the adventures of a remarkable girl who would travel the world, become mayor, and perform incredible feats. She was inspired by female role models such as Marie Curie and Helen Keller and had hopes of one day becoming a writer.
Her ambitions changed in middle school when she first discovered her aptitude for math with the help of a supportive teacher. By the time she reached high school, Mirzakhani made Iran's International Mathematical Olympiad team -- a first for a girl. She won gold medals two years in a row and became the first Iranian student to achieve a perfect score her second year. She says the challenge of the competitions helped deepen her love of mathematics. "You have to spend some energy and effort to see the beauty of math," she explained.
After attending college in Iran, she went on to graduate school at Harvard University where she became fascinated by hyperbolic geometry. This interest inspired much of her early work which, according to Stanford News, involved "solving the decades-old problem of calculating the volumes of moduli spaces of curves on objects known as Riemann surfaces."
Now a professor of mathematics at Stanford, Mirzakhani is honored to be the first female recipient of the Fields Medal. She told Stanford News, "This is a great honor. I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians." And, she believes that there will be many more women honored in the future because “there are really many great female mathematicians doing great things."
