Master Hiroshi Shirai was asked how we should practice Kata.
"We have Tai, and we have Yo. Tai means form. Yo means to use or to apply the technique. The competition is, for sure, only Tai, that is form. Yo is Bunkai, that is, tai-no-sen, go-no-sen, which must be performed with full kime and speed, good balance of body and spirit. When you master Tai (form) then you should do regular bunkai omote, until you are really confident in your technique and balance. After that, you should move on to bunkai-ura (to the opposite side), because it is important to practice from both sides."
