Why earthquakes happen?
Most earthquakes happen where tectonic plates meet. Earth's outer shell is broken into ~15 major plates that slowly drift, driven by heat from the mantle below.
1. Convergent boundaries
Plates collide. One dives under the other (subduction). This creates the deepest, most powerful quakes — e.g. Japan, Chile, Cascadia.
2. Transform boundaries
Plates grind sideways past each other. Classic example: the San Andreas Fault in California.
3.Divergent boundaries
Plates pull apart, forming rift zones. Earthquakes here are shallower and less destructive — e.g. the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
