Role of UN secretary general Secretary general of united nations is the head of UN, and appointed by 193 general assembly member. Secretary general role is administrative, overseeing peacekeeping and conflict resolution. UN 1st secretary general Trygive lie said " It is world most difficult job". Till today there are 9 secretary general and all of them are men and career diplomate. USA president Franklin d Roosevelt saw the role of secretary general as a "world moderator". Incumbent secretary general Antonio Guterres focus mostly on climate change, administrative changes and conflict resolution. Secretary general are mostly appointed from small or mid sized neutral countries. UN permanent security council member didn't nominate there member as a candidate of Secretary general. Security council play an important role in selection of secretary general; if any member country vetoed the nomination of any candidate he can't be selected. China vetoed the 3rd term for Austrian secretary general, and United States vetoed 2nd term for the candidate of Egypt. 10 non permanent member of security council has also role in appointment of secretary general; candidate has to secure 9 out of 10 votes to be selected. UN secretary general plays an important role in world peace. According to UN charter role of secretary general is diplomate, civil service and CEO. Successive secretary general plays their role in conflict resolution. Dag Hammerskjd plays role in Israel and Palestine conflict resolution. Kofi Annan played active role in Serbia Kosovo conflict. Kofi Annan famously said that " Countries can't hide behind sovereignty and do crime against humanity". Ban ki Moon also played very active role, but more of his role of was administrative. Peacekeeping: United nations secretary general oversees the peacekeeping mission of UN in conflicted area, and to provide humanitarian assistance to affected communities. Human resource: UN secretary general appoint 50 head of different UN Secretariat including the head of UN fund like United nations development program(UNDP). Countries lobbies for their candidate to get important posts.
