Arthritis refers to joint inflammation causing pain, stiffness, and swelling. Over 100 types exist, with osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear) and rheumatoid arthritis (autoimmune) being most common. Symptoms include joint pain, reduced range of motion, morning stiffness, and difficulty with daily activities. Risk factors include age, obesity, previous joint injuries, genetics, and repetitive stress. Arthritis can affect any joint but commonly targets knees, hips, hands, and spine.
Role of Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is a cornerstone of arthritis management:
Reduces pain and inflammation through manual therapy and modalities
Improves joint mobility with range-of-motion exercises
Strengthens surrounding muscles to support and protect joints
Teaches joint protection techniques preventing further damage
Prescribes low-impact exercises (swimming, cycling) maintaining fitness without joint stress
Improves functional ability for daily tasks
Provides assistive devices (braces, walking aids) reducing joint loads
