The department inaugurated in 1985. Its first Chairman was Dr. Fazle Karim Khan, who belonged to Karachi and had been Head Geography Department KU.

M.Phil. Thesis Defense
Miss. Mashal Barrech, M.Phil. Scholar, Department of Geography and Regional Planning successfully defended her M.Phil. thesis in the viva exam. Her thesis title was “Analysis of Rainfall Variation over Quetta from 2000 to 2019”.
Her internal examiner and supervisor was Dr. Romana Ambreen. While her external examiner was Dr. Muhammad Jamal Nasir from the University of Peshawar.
The Dean of the Faculty of Physical and Environmental Sciences, Prof. Dr Nizam ud Din Baloch, and a representative of the Graduate Studies Office (GSO) and DPR were also present during the viva voce examination.

Farewell on Retirement of Prof. Taleem Khattak

The Department of Geography and Regional Planning organised a farewell party on 14 May 2025 in honour of the Prof. Taleem Khattak sb on his retirement. He served the department for more than 32 years since his induction in 1992. The department pays tribute to him for his services and prays that may Allah Almighty grant him a happy post retirement life.

Two Students, Mr. Wali Jan and Miss Bakht Zamina of the Department of Geography and Regional Planning successfully defended their MPhil thesis in viva Exam. Thesis title of Mr. Wali Jan was “Socio-economi Impacts of Drought and the Adaptation Strategies in Awaran District, Balochistan”. The title of the research of Miss Bakht Zamina was " Analysis of Monsoon Rainfall Variability and Trend in Barkan District, Balochistan using Mann- kendall and Sen's Slope Estimator".
The External Examiner of both theses students were Dr. Rabail Urooj, Assistant Professor, Environmental Sciences, Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University, Quetta.
Their supervisor was Dr. Said Qasim, Professor, Department of Geography and Regional Planning, University of Balochistan, Quetta.
