π¦ Welding defects in root side related to fusion:
1οΈβ£ Lack of root pe*******on or incomplete pe*******on:
The weld metal fails to fill the root, leaving both root faces still visible and creating an unfused gap at the very bottom. Usually both edges are visible.
2οΈβ£ Lack of root fusion:
Incomplete (or lack of) root fusion means that while the weld may have penetrated to the correct depth, but failed to properly melt and bond both sides, usually one edge is visible.
π΄ Root Cause
π· Low heat input
π· MMA electrode too large (Low current density)
π· Large root face
π· Small root gap
π· Mis alignment at root

A visual guide to what we don't want to see on the job
Having a handy chart like this is great, but knowing why they happen is where the real skill comes in. Pick one defect from this picture and tell us: Whatβs the number one root cause behind it? (Inadequate gas shield? Wrong travel speed? Bad current?)
Letβs see who knows their welding metallurgy and inspection standards best! Drop your knowledge in the comments!
