Wilson Disease Support Group (WDSG), KMC Peshawar conducted a
Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Case Discussion at
Medical B Unit, Department of Medicine, Khyber Teaching Hospital
on April 08, 2026

MDT Participants were :
Dr. Iqbal Haider – Professor of Internal Medicine, Dr. Zahidullah Khan – Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, Dr. Zia Muhammad– Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Dr. Omar Khan – Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology, Dr. Muhammad Siddique Khan– Assistant Professor of Hepatobiliary Surgery KTH, Mr. Zulqarnain– Nutritionist, Dr. Javeria Javaid – Postgraduate Resident (Unit B, Dr. Noman Ullah – Postgraduate Resident (Unit B, Dr. Arsalan Waris– Postgraduate Resident (Unit B, Ms. Iqra Khaksar – GS MIG KMC, Ms. Ainain Rasool from team media, MIG KMC.

The patient is a known case of Wilson disease for the past two years, currently presenting with features of progressive chronic liver disease, including ascites.
The case was comprehensively reviewed by the multidisciplinary team. Based on clinical findings and disease trajectory, the MDT reached a consensus that the patient is a suitable candidate for liver transplantation

A comprehensive pre-transplant workup was advised, including detailed clinical assessment, nutritional assessment, psychosocial evaluation and radiological imaging.

Transplant Options, donor considerations and management plan including the risks and benefits if it ,was discussed.

This MDT discussion highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach in managing complex hepatological conditions such as Wilson disease. Early identification of transplant eligibility and timely referral are crucial to improving survival outcomes and quality of life in such patients.

Khyber Medical College and Khyber Teaching Hospital - MTI KTH Peshawar have formally launched the 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 (WDSG), a 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭-𝐨𝐟-𝐢𝐭𝐬-𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa aimed at improving early identification, multidisciplinary management, and long-term care for patients suffering from Wilson Disease, a rare but potentially life-threatening genetic disorder.

The inaugural ceremony was held at Khyber Medical College and was graced by the Honorable Dean, KMC, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐃𝐫. 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐦𝐮𝐝 𝐀𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐳𝐞𝐛, who served as the Chief Guest and formally inaugurated the support group as its Patron-in-Chief.

The initiative is led by 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐫. 𝐈𝐪𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐚𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 - Consultant Physician & Associate Dean Research KMC, and 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐭. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐃𝐫. Suleman Elahi Malik, has established the group to provide a structured and collaborative platform for patients, their families, Medicine Interest Group KMC, postgraduate trainees, and consultants from multiple specialties.

𝐀 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞:

𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐬𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 requires coordinated input from a diverse set of specialists. Accordingly, the WDSG brings together expert Program Directors from:

8- Pediatrics: 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐃𝐫. 𝐙𝐢𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐝

Postgraduate trainees from the concerned specialty and 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩-𝐊𝐡𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 will form the Founding Steering Committee, while senior consultants will act as the Principal Clinical Faculty and Program Directors of the group.

The WDSG will conduct quarterly patient clinics, arrange family screening, facilitate genetic testing, support access to medications, initiate awareness campaigns, distribute Urdu pamphlets, and assist in referrals for liver transplantation where required.

A patient registry for 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐬𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 is also being initiated, an important step for research and policy development in KP.

All the healthcare professionals across KPK are encouraged to refer their Wilson Disease patients for effective management.

This event was organized with reference to 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 being commemorated on 6th December each year.

𝐊𝐌𝐂 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐊𝐓𝐇 𝐏𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫 are committed to delivering effective health care services for the ailing community of KPK.

The workshop “Integrating Dialysis Care: From Clinical Indications to Challenges and Technical Innovations” was successfully conducted on 25th September 2025 at the Nephrology Conference Room, KTH.

The session was led by our distinguished speakers, Dr. Ahmad Zeb (Professor of Nephrology) and Dr. Aimal Khan (Assistant Professor Nephrology), who shared their expertise on the clinical aspects, challenges, and latest technical innovations in dialysis care.

A huge appreciation goes to the organising team – Danyal Ahmad, Mohsin Wardag, Javaria Gul, and Ibad Ur Rehman – for putting together such an insightful academic event.

The July–August electives provided students with valuable exposure across various departments, from emergency and trauma care to minor OT and general medicine. These rotations offered opportunities to enhance clinical skills, build confidence, and learn directly from real cases under the guidance of seniors. Grateful for the experience and the knowledge gained.
