PhD Thesis Defense Successfully Conducted at KMU Institute of Nursing Sciences
On 21st May 2026, Khyber Medical University successfully conducted the PhD thesis defense of Ms. Afsha Khan at the Institute of Nursing Sciences.
Ms. Afsha Khan defended her doctoral research titled, “Development and Validation of Emotional Safety Instrument (ESI) for Hospitalized Patients.” The study is considered a highly novel and original contribution to nursing research and patient-centered healthcare, focusing on the emotional safety and psychological wellbeing of hospitalized patients.
The research was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dildar Muhammad, Dean Faculty of Nursing Sciences at Khyber Medical University. The study was co-supervised by Dr. Najma and Dr. Sabiha.
The external examiners for the PhD thesis were Prof. Dr. Rubina Barolia from Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery and Dr. Pamela Marshall from Ziauddin University. During the PhD defense, Prof. Dr. Rubina Barolia participated as the external evaluator, while Professor Aurangzeb from Rehman College of Nursing served as the internal examiner. The PhD defense was convened by Prof. Dr. Mohsin Shah from Institute of Basic Medical Sciences.
The defense was attended by faculty members, researchers, postgraduate scholars, students, and academic leaders who appreciated the scientific rigor, originality, and practical significance of the research. The study is expected to contribute significantly toward improving quality of care and strengthening patient-centered nursing practices in healthcare institutions.
The Faculty of Nursing Sciences at Khyber Medical University congratulates Ms. Afsha Khan on this outstanding academic achievement and wishes her continued success in her future academic and professional endeavors.
KMU Organizes 2nd International Nursing Research Conference 2026.
Khyber Medical University (KMU) Peshawar organized the 2nd International Nursing Research Conference 2026 under the theme “Empowered Nurses Save Lives” in connection with International Nurses Day 2026. The conference was arranged by the KMU-Institute of Nursing Sciences with the objective of promoting nursing education, research, innovation, and evidence-based healthcare practices in Pakistan.
The conference was formally inaugurated by KMU Registrar Inam Ullah Wazir. Among others present on the occasion were Akhtar Bano, Director Nursing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Prof. Dr. Dildar Muhammad, Dean Faculty of Nursing Sciences, Associate Professor Dr. Najma Naz, Director Institute of Nursing Sciences, Prof. Dr. Rubina Nazli, Dean Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Prof. Dr. Aurangzeb , Principal Rehman College of Nursing, Rahmat Ali, Director Nursing LRH, and Barkat Ullah, Director Nursing HMC Peshawar, Prof Syed Yousuf Shah Principal Northwest College of Nursing.
Addressing the participants, the speakers highlighted the pivotal role of nurses in strengthening the healthcare system and improving the quality of patient care. They emphasized that nursing education and research are essential to developing a skilled healthcare workforce capable of addressing emerging medical challenges, particularly in developing countries like Pakistan.
The speakers noted that Pakistan’s healthcare sector is facing numerous challenges, including a shortage of trained healthcare professionals, an increasing disease burden, maternal and child health issues, and limited healthcare facilities in remote areas. In such circumstances, professionally trained nurses play a critical role in healthcare delivery, patient safety, disease prevention, rehabilitation, and community health services.
The organizers stated that the KMU-Institute of Nursing Sciences, has been actively contributing to the promotion of nursing education, professional capacity-building, and scientific research at both national and international levels. They added that empowering nurses through quality education, advanced training, and research opportunities can significantly improve healthcare standards in the country.
As part of the conference activities, 11 pre-conference workshops were organized on various themes related to nursing research, clinical skills, healthcare innovation, and evidence-based practices. Around 988 participants registered for the workshops, while more than 300 participants actively attended the sessions, reflecting the growing interest in nursing research and professional development.
A key highlight of the conference was the enthusiastic participation in scientific sessions, keynote presentations, research discussions, and academic networking activities, attended by healthcare experts, researchers, educators, and students from across Pakistan.
