Board of Studies Meeting Held at the Department of Environmental Sciences

A meeting of the Board of Studies (BoS), Department of Environmental Sciences, was held on 21 September 2026, bringing together distinguished academicians and experts to deliberate on important academic, curricular, and programme-related matters.

The meeting was attended by renowned academicians, including Prof. Dr. Sardar Khan (TI), Vice Chancellor, University of Shangla and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University Sheringal; Prof. Dr. Qasim, Pro Vice Chancellor, University of Swat; Prof. Dr. M. Akmal, Chairman, Pakistan Science Foundation; Prof. Dr. Hizbullah Khan, University of Peshawar; Prof. Dr. Mian Ishaq, University of Agriculture, Peshawar; and Prof. Dr. M. Shamas Ali Baig, Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan.

The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Bushra Khan, Chairperson, Department of Environmental Sciences, in the presence of Dr. Saeeda Yousaf and Dr. Shahla Nazneen.

The Board discussed a range of key academic and curricular matters, including the introduction of new PhD and BS courses, academic programmes, and certificate courses. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening academic programmes, enhancing the quality of education, and aligning the curriculum with emerging trends, contemporary challenges, and future requirements in the field of Environmental Sciences.

The meeting provided a valuable platform for academic exchange and collaboration, reflecting the department’s continued commitment to academic excellence, curriculum development, research, and innovation in Environmental Sciences.

The Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Peshawar, successfully organized a three-day International Conference from 31 July to 2 August 2026, bringing together academicians, researchers, policymakers, development partners, and students to discuss environmental challenges and sustainable solutions.

The conference was held under the patronage of Dr. Bushra Khan, Chairperson DES, and coordinated by Dr. Shahla Nazneen and Dr. Saeeda Yousaf. The Honourable Minister for Higher Education and Local Government, Mr. Meena Khan Afridi, attended as Chief Guest and emphasized the importance of translating scientific research into evidence-based policies through stronger collaboration between academia and government institutions. He also highlighted the achievements of the Billion Tree Afforestation Programme (BTAP) in addressing climate change.

The event was graced by Prof. Dr. Johar Ali, Vice Chancellor, University of Peshawar, along with renowned keynote speakers and distinguished guests from leading universities and national institutions. The conference was organized in collaboration with UNICEF, IRC, and Empowering Hands.

Researchers and scholars from across Pakistan presented their latest findings through oral and poster presentations, promoting knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration in areas including climate resilience, environmental sustainability, water and sanitation, public health, and biodiversity conservation.

The conference concluded with a strong commitment to advancing research-driven solutions, strengthening partnerships, and promoting evidence-based policymaking for sustainable development.

Tragedy of Swat: A call for flood safety, public awareness and accountability

سوات کا سانحہ: سیلاب سے بچاؤ، عوامی بیداری اور مطلوبہ احتسابی عمل

سوات میں مبینہ طور پر سیلابی پانی میں بہہ جانے والے خاندان کے 18 افراد کی المناک تصویر سیلاب کے خطرے سے آگاہی، خود کو محفوظ رکھنے اور اجتماعی ذمہ داری کی اہم اہمیت کی واضح کرتی ہے۔یہ دردناک واقعہ یاد دہانی کے ہمیشہ کے لیے ذہن پر نقش رہے گا، خاص طور پر مون سون کے موسم میں۔ اس میں سیالکوٹ سے ایک ہی خاندان سے تعلق رکھنے والے سیاح چھٹیاں گزارنے کے لئے سوات آئے تھے۔ ان کو پیش ہونے والا مسلہ انفرادی عمل، اداریاتی غفلت، انتظامی کوتاہیوں، اور کمیونٹی کی مدد میں تاخیر ایک مجموعی حل کے امکانات کے پیچیدہ عوامل کو اجاگر کرتا ہے۔

اس سانحے کے تناظر میں سیلاب کے خطرات سے متعلق آگاہی کی شدید کمی دیکھیائی دیتی ہے۔ پاکستان میں مون سون کا موسم اپنی موسلا دھار بارشوں اور تیز سیلابوں کے لیے مشہور ہے، خاص طور پر سوات جیسے پہاڑی علاقوں میں، جہاں دریا کے کنارے تیزی سے اور بغیر کسی وارننگ کے بڑھ سکتے ہیں۔ یہ دعویٰ کہ خاندان پہلے 30 منٹ کے اندر انخلاء کرکے اپنی جان بچا سکتا تھا سیلاب سے حفاظت کے ایک بنیادی اصول کی نشاندہی کرتا ہے: جلد شناخت اور فوری کارروائی سب سے اہم ہے۔ بہت سے لوگ، خاص طور پر جو مقامی خطوں اور موسم کے رویوں سے ناواقف ہیں، بڑھتے ہوئے پانی کی رفتار اور طاقت کو کم سمجھتے ہیں۔ عوامی بیداری کی مہم، شاید مقامی زبان میں آسانی سے دستیاب معلومات کو موبائل الرٹس یا سیاحتی علاقوں میں نمایاں اشارے کے ذریعے استعمال کرنا ضروری ہے۔ اس طرح کی معلومات زائرین کو مون سون کے دوران خطرات اور پانی کی سطح میں اضافے کی پہلی علامت پر فوری انخلاء کی اہمیت کے بارے میں آگاہ کرنے کے لیے اہم ہیں۔

انفرادی آگاہی کے بعد، قریبی ہوٹل کی ذمہ داری کو بڑھاوا نہیں دیا جا سکتا۔ یہ الزام کہ ہوٹل نے سیاحوں کی توجہ کے لیے دریا کے کنارے میں ہیرا پھیری کی، یہ ایک خطرناک اور غیر اخلاقی عمل کی طرف اشارہ کرتا ہے۔ قدرتی آبی گزرگاہوں کو تبدیل کرنا، خاص طور پر تجارتی فائدے کے لیے، قدرتی نکاسی آب میں خلل ڈال کر اور علاقوں کو سیلاب کا زیادہ خطرہ بنا کر سیلاب کے خطرات کو بڑھا سکتا ہے۔ ایسی حرکتیں نہ صرف ماحولیاتی طور پر غیر ذمہ دارانہ ہیں بلکہ مجرمانہ طور پر لاپرواہی بھی ہیں جب ان سے انسانی جانوں کو براہ راست خطرہ لاحق ہوتا ہے۔ مزید برآں، زندگی بچانے والی جیکٹس فراہم کرنے میں ہوٹل کی ناکامی ایک واضح غلطی ہے۔ قدرتی آبی ذخائر کے قریب کام کرنے والی کسی بھی اسٹیبلشمنٹ کی اخلاقی اور قانونی ذمہ داری ہے کہ وہ اپنے سرپرستوں کو ضروری حفاظتی سامان سے لیس کرے اور ہنگامی ردعمل کے لیے تربیت یافتہ اہلکار رکھے۔ اس واقعے کو ایسے طریقوں کی مکمل تحقیقات کو متحرک کرنا چاہیے اور منافع کے لیے عوامی تحفظ سے سمجھوتہ کرنے والے کاروباروں کے لیے سخت ضوابط اور جرمانے کا باعث بننا چاہیے۔

دریا کا یہ حصہ ریت اور عمارتی کرشن نکالنے کے لیے بھی استعمال ہوتا ہے۔ اس طرح کی کاروباری سرگرمیاں دریا کے کنارے کو بے قاعدہ بنا کر تباہ کر دیتے ہیں۔ جب ایسی جگہ سیلاب آجائے تو پانی کی گہرائی کا اندازہ لگانا مشکل ہوتا ہے۔ ایسی سرگرمیوں کو ماحولیاتی اور کان کنی کے قوانین کی روشنی میں منظم کیا جانا چاہیے۔

ضلعی انتظامیہ اور ریسکیو 1122 کی ڈیوٹی بھی سخت جانچ پڑتال کی زد میں ہے۔ ہنگامی خدمات کی طرف سے جواب میں تاخیر، اگر درست ہے تو، ناقابل قبول ہے۔ سیلاب کی صورت حال میں، ہر منٹ اہم ہوتا ہے۔ ضلعی انتظامیہ آفات کی تیاری کے لیے ذمہ دار ہیں، بشمول قبل از وقت وارننگ سسٹم، انخلاء کے منصوبے، اور ہنگامی جواب دہندگان کے ساتھ ہم آہنگی پیدا کرنا۔ ریسکیو 1122، قابل ستائش طور پر اہم خدمات فراہم کرتے ہوئے، تیز رفتار تعیناتی اور موثر مواصلات کو یقینی بنانے کی ضرورت ہے، خاص طور پر دور دراز یا دشوار گزار علاقوں میں۔ یہ واقعہ ان کے ردعمل کے پروٹوکول، وسائل کی تقسیم، اور مقامی حکام کے ساتھ ہم آہنگی کے طریقہ کار کا جائزہ لینے کی ضرورت ہے۔

محکمہ سیاحت کا کردار بھی اتنا ہی اہم ہے۔ محض دلکش مقامات کی تشہیر کرنے کے بجائے، انہیں محفوظ سیاحتی علاقوں کی نشاندہی اور تشہیر کو ترجیح دینی چاہیے، خاص طور پر زیادہ خطرے والے موسموں میں۔ اس میں محفوظ طریقوں کے بارے میں واضح رہنما خطوط فراہم کرنا، مخصوص ادوار کے دوران کمزور مقامات کا دورہ کرنے کے متعلق مشورہ دینا، اور حفاظتی انفراسٹرکچر کو یقینی بنانے کے لیے مقامی انتظامیہ کے ساتھ تعاون کرنا شامل ہے۔ ایک جامع "ٹورسٹ سیفٹی چارٹر" تیار کرنا جو سیاحوں اور خدمات فراہم کرنے والوں دونوں کی ذمہ داریوں کا خاکہ پیش کرتا ہے ایک فعال قدم ہوسکتا ہے۔

مضبوط ابتدائی وارننگ کا نظام: موسمیاتی پیشن گوئی اور مقامی سیلاب کے سینسرز میں سرمایہ کاری، متعدد چینلز کے ذریعے انتباہات کی مؤثر ترسیل اہمیت کے حامل ہیں۔

سخت ماحولیاتی ضابطے: تعمیراتی مواد کے قانونی یا غیر قانونی طور پر نکالنے، قدرتی مناظر کی تعمیر کو مد نظر رکھنا ضروری ہے۔ ایسے عوامل کے خلاف قوانین کا نفاذ، خاص طور پر آبی ذخائر کے قریب، ضروری ہے۔ اس میں ماحولیاتی ایکٹ، مائن اینڈ منرل ایکٹ اور ریور پروٹیکشن ایکٹ قابل ذکر ہیں۔

پوری جوابدہی اور کاروبار: سیاحت کے آپریٹرز کو قانونی اور مالی طور پر لاپرواہی اور حفاظتی انتظامات کی کمی کے لیے جوابدہ ٹھہرانا چاھیئے۔ اس میں ہوٹل آپریٹر کو خاص آگاہی دینی ضروری ہے۔

بہتر ایمرجنسی رسپانس: ریسکیو سروسز کی صلاحیت، رفتار اور ہم آہنگی کو بہتر بنانا۔

فعال سیاحت کا انتظام: جامع حفاظتی مشورے اور حقیقی طور پر محفوظ علاقوں کی شناخت کو شامل کرنے کے لیے سیاحت کے محکموں کی توجہ کو تبدیل کرنا۔

کمیونٹی کو بااختیار بنانا: مقامی کمیونٹیز کو آفات کی تیاری اور ردعمل کے فریم ورک میں تربیت اور انضمام ضروری ہے۔

عوامی بیداری کی مہم: مقامی لوگوں اور سیاحوں دونوں کو سیلاب کے خطرات اور اپنے دفاع کی حکمت عملیوں سے آگاہ کرنے کے لیے مسلسل اور ہدفی مہم باقاعدہ طور پر چلانا چاھیئے۔

سوات میں 18 جانوں کا المناک نقصان تبدیلی کے لیے ایک طاقتور عمل انگیز کے طور پر کام کرے گا۔ یہ ایک بھیانک یاد ہے جو کئی سالوں تک یاد رہے گا۔ فطرت کے حسن کی رغبت مضبوط ہے، لیکن اس کی طاقت کا احترام، سخت حفاظتی اقدامات اور اجتماعی ذمہ داری کے ساتھ، اس بات کو یقینی بنانے کے لیے اہم ہے کہ تعطیلات سانحات میں تبدیل نہ ہوں۔

University of Peshawar Hosts Seminar on International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

The University of Peshawar, in collaboration with the Montreal Protocol initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Ozone Unit (NOU) of the Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination (MoCC&EC), Government of Pakistan, organized a seminar on the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on Thursday, May 29, 2025.

The seminar featured a range of esteemed speakers who shared their expertise on various aspects of ozone layer protection. Dr. Saeeda Yousaf, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Peshawar, introduced the topic of ozone layer protection.

Dr. Saleem Janjua, Chief/NPM, National Ozone Unit (NOU) of Pakistan, UNDP & MoCC&EC, discussed the Montreal Protocol and the status of ozone-depleting substances. Other speakers included Dr. Mohammad Nafees, who highlighted Pakistan's role in ozone layer protection, and Dr. Shahla Nazneen, who spoke about tropospheric ozone, its effects, and remedies.

Additional speakers included Prof Dr. Uzaira Rafique, Former Vice Chancellor, Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU), Rawalpindi, who discussed ozone in the context of fiction, science, and action, and Mr. K. M. Zubair, Former Managing Director, ENERCON/NEECA, Ministry of Energy (Power Division), Islamabad, who navigated the challenges of the Kigali Amendment. The seminar was led by Dr. Saleem Janjua, Chief of the National Ozone Unit (NOU), who highlighted the government's efforts in protecting the ozone layer and addressing climate change.

Dr. Naeem Qazi, Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Peshawar, was the chief guest at the seminar. The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of ozone layer protection, the implementation of the Montreal Protocol, and the challenges and opportunities in this domain. The Department of Environmental Sciences is proud to announce that three of its MPhil Scholars successfully defended their theses today, marking a significant academic milestone.

Miss Kainat Malik defended her thesis on "DETECTION OF DIETHYLTOLUAMIDE (DEET) IN WASTEWATER SAMPLES AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS OF PESHAWAR." Her Supervisor was Prof. Dr. Bushra Khan, External Examiner Prof.Dr Ishaq Ahmad Mian.

Miss Hina Tariq defended her thesis on "MICROBIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF WATER SAMPLES USED BY STREET FOOD VENDORS IN SELECTED AREAS OF PESHAWAR." Her supervisor was Prof. Dr. Bushra Khan, External Examiner Prof.Dr Ishaq Ahmad Mian.

Mr Muhammad Musaddiq defended his thesis on "Assessment of Community Perception about Swat River Water Quality and it's Ecosystem Health " Supervisor was Prof. Dr. Bushra Khan, and External Examiner Prof.Dr Ishaq Ahmad Mian.
