**Elements of Drama_Poetics by Aristotle**
According to Aristotle, in his seminal work Poetics, the elements of drama (particularly tragedy) are six in number. These elements constitute the essential components that make up a well-structured dramatic work. They are as follows:
1. Plot (Mythos)
The plot is the soul of tragedy and the most important element of drama.
It refers to the arrangement of incidents or events in the play—the structure of actions that lead from the beginning to the end.
Aristotle emphasizes unity of action, meaning the plot should be coherent, with every incident logically connected to the whole.
It must have a clear beginning, middle, and end, and should evoke catharsis—the purging of pity and fear in the audience.
2. Character (Ethos)
Characters are the agents who perform the actions of the plot. They should be consistent, appropriate, and realistic in their behavior. The moral quality of characters must be evident through their choices and actions. The protagonist’s hamartia (tragic flaw) often leads to their downfall, creating emotional impact.
3. Thought (Dianoia)
Thought refers to the themes, ideas, and arguments expressed in the play. It includes the reasoning and intellectual content conveyed through dialogue and action. Through thought, the playwright communicates moral, social, or philosophical messages.
4. Diction (Lexis)
Diction is the expression of meaning in words—the choice of language, style, and dialogue. It encompasses the playwright’s use of literary devices, figures of speech, and tone appropriate to character and situation. Aristotle valued clarity and propriety of language that aligns with the emotional and ethical tone of the play.
5. Melody or Song (Melos)
Melody refers to the musical element of drama, which in Greek tragedy was provided by the chorus. It enhances the emotional experience and rhythm of the play, harmonizing with the action and mood. Aristotle regarded music as an embellishment that adds bea
