ایک نایاب اور مہلک وائرس نے سمندر میں خطرے کی گھنٹی بجا دی ہے، جب ایکسپڈیشن کروز شپ MV Hondius پر ہنٹا وائرس کے مشتبہ پھیلاؤ نے متعدد افراد کو متاثر کیا اور ہلاکتوں کا سبب بنا۔ یہ جہاز بحرِ اوقیانوس میں کیپ وردے کے قریب سفر کر رہا تھا جب کئی مسافروں میں فلو جیسی علامات ظاہر ہوئیں، جو تیزی سے سنگین سانس کی بیماری میں تبدیل ہو گئیں۔

📰 Hantavirus Scare on Cruise Ship Sparks Global Health Concern
A rare and deadly virus has triggered alarm on the high seas after a suspected outbreak of hantavirus aboard the expedition cruise ship MV Hondius led to multiple infections and fatalities. The vessel, sailing in the Atlantic Ocean near Cape Verde, became the centre of international attention when several passengers developed severe flu-like symptoms that quickly escalated into life-threatening respiratory complications.
According to health officials, at least seven cases have been reported, with three confirmed deaths involving European passengers. As the situation worsened, the ship was placed under quarantine, and emergency medical protocols were activated. Spanish authorities later permitted the vessel to dock in the Canary Islands to allow evacuation and urgent medical treatment of critically ill individuals. Teams operating under the guidance of the World Health Organization have since been assessing the situation and working to determine the exact nature and source of the outbreak.
Hantavirus is a rare but serious disease primarily transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents. The virus spreads when people inhale air contaminated with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. In most cases worldwide, infections occur in rural or poorly sanitized environments where rodents are present. However, what makes this incident particularly unusual is the absence of a clearly identified rodent source on the ship, raising concerns about alternative transmission routes.
Medical experts are especially focused on the possibility that the outbreak may involve a strain similar to the Andes virus, one of the few known types of hantavirus capable of limited human-to-human transmission. If confirmed, this would mark a significant development, as most hantavirus strains do not spread between people. The confined environment of a cruise ship, where passengers share dining areas, ventilation systems, and living spaces, may have contributed to the rapid spread of the illness.
Clinically, hantavirus can cause a severe condition known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which affects the lungs and can lead to respiratory failure. Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and headaches, but the disease can quickly progress to severe breathing difficulties. The fatality rate for HPS can be as high as 40 percent, making early diagnosis and intensive medical care critical for survival. There is currently no specific antiviral treatment or widely available vaccine for the disease; patients are treated with supportive care, including oxygen therapy and intensive monitoring.
