With these words in mind let’s create our Environments providing the very best of ourselves that we can gift the child.

The prepared environment is so important. It is the heartbeat of the successful daily unfolding of everything in a day. The silent gentle heartbeat that pulsates with daily reality of little 2 1/2 - 6 year olds. It is far more than a tidy room with oh! so lovely shelves!– and “gasp! The baskets and miniature small objects! It is a welcoming home where each child feels naturally safe, respected, and free to grow at their own gentle pace.
And as they enter the door, their lungs fill with deep breaths and their hearts swell up with love and joy….with peace. Their eyes lock onto the teachers eyes and they know…. They know….THIS IS HOME AWAY FROM HOME. 🙏🏼❤️

In our schools we prepare every space with care, patience and deep respect for the Montessori way, just as Maria Montessori herself showed us. We read The Absorbent Mind over and over; We follow Montessori’s Own Handbook and refer to it very often in the course of the year. As the weeks unfold we support one another in creating just….. that…. Perfect……Environment…for….our….children.

First, begin with an empty canvas. Blank, empty but lots and lots of light and some more light. Clear the room completely. Clean every surface until it shines – floors, windows, shelves and corners. Let fresh air and natural light fill the space. This quiet act of cleansing helps us remember that we are creating order for the children’s spirits as well as their hands.
I bear in mind ancient rituals of CLEANSING. Throughout history Cleansing has been an Art of Purification. So too our classrooms. We cleanse it well in preparation for the year. Let our hearts beat a rhythm of preparation…a crescendo of faith, hope and love.🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼

📍CHILD SIZE furniture and shelves
Everything must be the right size for little bodies and hands. Choose low, open shelves placed around the room so children can reach freely. Use light tables and chairs that a child can move on their own.
Recall your training, How to carry a chair; How to pick up a chair.

Keep the centre of the room clear for movement and the ELLIPSE, walking line. Walking the line with a bell, a feather, a candlestick….reverence! Peace! Inner joy!
A small, peaceful corner with cushions or flowers gives a quiet place to rest when needed.

“The Environment must be beautiful”
How simple that sounds.
How Peaceful! Arrange the materials simply and beautifully, always from left to right and simple to more complex:

📍Practical Life near the entrance or sink – pouring, spooning, buttoning, polishing, sweeping, and caring for plants.
Use real, natural materials that feel lovely to touch.
Remember Practical Life Materials can be purchased for next to nothing at thrift stores.
Glassware, porcelain from someone’s home that was once used daily and lovingly…beautiful wooden boxes hidden up on a shelf gathering dust…just look…look some more…you’ll find lots of very special items which can be used in the classroom.
Better still..ask grandma or extended family..check out garage sales….car boot sales…you’ll be surprised at what you’ll find.

📍Sensorial materials - so very important. Don’t underestimate the power of the Sensorial materials that help children refine their senses – the Pink Tower, Brown Stair,Cylinder Blocks …check your ALBUMS.

📍Language – sandpaper letters, the movable alphabet, picture books and early readers,….
Mathematics – number rods, golden beads, spindle boxes and all the concrete materials that make numbers come alive. Let the children remember the STAMPS from the Stamp Game and pair it up with stamps used not so long ago in posting birthday cards and well wishes.
📍Cultural – globes, puzzle maps, leaves, flowers and simple science treasures that awaken wonder about our world. Oh! The beauty of Botany; the beauty of the Geography Cultural Materials…..
Only a few materials at a time. Too many can overwhelm; too few can leave children hungry. Each tray or basket should look inviting, like a small gift waiting to be chosen.
The hot and winter of each and every little item in the Environment.

Pay attention to every detail of beauty. Fresh flowers, a little plant the children can care for, soft natural colours on the walls, and plenty of space to move. The room should feel calm, ordered and full of quiet joy. 🌺🌷

Most important of all – prepare yourself.☺️🙏🏼 Before the children arrive, take a moment in silence. Observe your own heart. Wear comfortable, graceful clothes and move gently in the space. Remember that your calm presence and patient observation are the greatest gifts you bring. Our role is to prepare, to present when needed, and then to step back with trust.

Finally, keep the environment quietly and beautifully alive. Each week we tidy, repair and refresh. We observe the children carefully and change materials only when they are ready for something new. We protect the space from clutter or things that do not truly serve the children’s development.
AVOID CLUTTER.
When we prepare in this loving, thoughtful way, something beautiful happens. Children settle. They concentrate for long stretches. They become helpful, gentle and deeply happy. They grow in independence, kindness and a real love of learning that will stay with them always.
This is the gift we offer in our school. Let us prepare every classroom with the same care we would give our own precious children – with patience, reverence and great love.

The second half of the session explained how to treat minor cuts & burns. Also a video on administering CPR. Ideally 100-120 compressions per minute and minimally 60-90.
The session ended with certificates given by PMA and interested participants willing to sign up for the
full six hour course.

It was a session to develop awareness about how to respond in case of an emergency. How to identify and assess the situation and how to proceed to help the victim.

A very senior Montessorian and a very beloved mentor and guide for a number of students.
Shireen Gaya recited verses from the Holy Quran as well as Fatiha. May Allah grant her soul the highest place in Jannah.

For lovers of Montessori history-- Today I encountered an antique album containing this taped-in copy of “A Montessorian’s Prayer,” signed by Mario M. Montessori himself. I wanted to know whose album it was, when the card was signed, and how the prayer fit into Montessori history, so I began researching.

The album turned out to be Lakshmi Kripalani’s handwritten transcription of Dr. Maria Montessori’s 1946 lectures in Karachi. Kripalani was a student on the course, where Dr. Montessori delivered the theory lectures and Mario presented the practical work. Was this card a gift to students in the course?

The date provided another discovery. Kripalani’s album places this copy in 1946, two years before the prayer appeared under Dr. Montessori’s name in the October 1948 issue of The Theosophist.

Searching for the prayer elsewhere, I found it in The Absorbent Mind (1949) at the end of the chapter on the preparation of the teacher. Dr. Montessori writes, however, that "It is not a prayer, but a memorandum and so for Montessori teachers an invocation, a kind of syllabus, our only syllabus.”

Our only syllabus, she says.

Does this mean that Dr. Montessori did not title the card herself? Or, perhaps the title evolved; in any case, the tension between the card and how she would later describe these words makes the artifact all the more interesting.

And, on the subject of this album? Kripalani’s handwritten notes were eventually published as Dr. Maria Montessori’s "1946 Lectures, Karachi, India" (1949).

To put this in the timeline, it would have been around the end of WWII, which had put Dr. Montessori and Mario in India for the prior seven years. They would soon after end their exile and return to Europe for the 1946 London Course.

So, what began for me today as an intriguing Mario Montessori signature became a direct connection to an AMI student, her course with Maria and Mario Montessori, and the books based on the series of 1946 lectures which are part of the preparation of Montessori teachers to this day.

It is with profound grief that we share the passing away of Mrs. Anisa Moin on Friday July 17, 2026.

May Allah grant her ease in her journey ahead, and a beautiful place in Jannah.

The world of Montessori education has lost another stalwart. She was a very valuable help at the Training Center to the teachers, guiding them as they began their professional journey. Another pillar of support has fallen.
We pray for her soul to rest in eternal peace.
