Unlocking the Potential of Pakistan's Garlic Industry: A New Breed for Increased Yields and Profits

Garlic is a versatile and highly sought-after crop that is used in a wide range of dishes and cuisines worldwide. In Pakistan, garlic is a staple ingredient in many traditional dishes, and it is also used for medicinal purposes. However, despite its popularity, Pakistan is a relatively small producer of garlic compared to other major producing countries. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Pakistan's annual production of garlic is 81,167 tonnes, which is significantly lower than the top producing countries like China, India, Bangladesh, and Egypt.

One of the main reasons for this low production is the lack of high-yielding and disease-resistant garlic varieties. This is where the new breed of garlic called NARC G1 comes in. Developed by the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) in Pakistan, this new variety has been recorded to produce up to 200 to 350 Mun per acre, which is significantly higher than other varieties. This means that farmers can expect to harvest more garlic per acre, which can lead to increased profits.

Another advantage of NARC G1 is its long shelf life. It can be stored for a year if kept in a well-ventilated and shady place with stalks. This means that farmers can store and sell the crop throughout the year, which can help stabilize the market and increase farmers' incomes. This is particularly beneficial for farmers in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan, where the demand for garlic is high, and the market is relatively stable.

NARC G1 is also resistant to common diseases that affect garlic, which reduces the risk of crop loss and increases the chances of a successful harvest. This makes it a more profitable option for farmers, as they don't have to worry about losing their crop due to disease.

In addition to these advantages, NARC G1 has a high demand in the local and international market, as the garlic produced by this variety is considered to be of high quality. This opens up the possibility for farmers to tap into new markets and increase their profits.

In conclusion, Pakistan's garlic industry has the potential to be a significant contributor to the country's economy, and the NARC G1 variety is a step in the right direction. With its high yield, long shelf life, disease resistance, and high demand in the market, this new breed of garlic is poised to revolutionize the way garlic is grown and marketed in Pakistan. For farmers looking to increase their income and secure a stable market, garlic farming with NARC G1 is a valuable opportunity to consider.

New NASA Nuclear Rocket Plan To Get To Mars In just 45 Days πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has reportedly been working on a new nuclear rocket plan to get to Mars in just 45 days. According to an article on the website Science Alert, published on January 23rd, 2023, this plan is part of NASA's Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program for 2023. The proposal, titled "Bimodal NTP/NEP with a Wave Rotor Topping Cycle" was put forward by Prof. Ryan Gosse, the Hypersonics Program Area Lead at the University of Florida and a member of the Florida Applied Research in Engineering (FLARE) team. The proposal is one of the 14 selected by the NIAC this year for Phase I development, which includes a $12,500 grant to assist in maturing the technology and methods involved.

Nuclear Thermal and Nuclear Electric Propulsion (NTP/NEP) is considered a top contender for propulsion to beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and the Earth-Moon system. Nuclear propulsion uses the heat generated by a nuclear reaction to produce thrust, unlike traditional chemical rockets which burn fuel to create a hot gas that is expelled out the back of the rocket to generate thrust. Nuclear propulsion is more powerful and efficient than chemical rockets and could potentially be used for deep space missions, such as travel to Mars. NASA and Soviet space program spent decades researching nuclear propulsion during the Space Race, and NASA reignited its nuclear program a few years ago, with the aim of developing bimodal nuclear propulsion - a two-part system consisting of an NTP and NEP element - that could enable transits to Mars in 100 days.

The Grey Junglefowl, a bird species found in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, including Pakistan, is not only an important part of the ecosystem but also holds great potential for the poultry industry. This wild ancestor of the domestic chicken has a distinctive male plumage and loud calls that are used to attract females during the breeding season.

Found in a variety of habitats including subtropical and tropical forests, submontane and montane regions, and scrublands, the Grey Junglefowl is known for its striking plumage, which includes a bright red and orange head, a black breast, and a long, bronze-green tail. The females, on the other hand, have a more subdued plumage and are usually brownish-grey in color.

But the importance of the Grey Junglefowl goes beyond its aesthetic appeal, as it has a great genetic diversity that can be utilized to improve the performance of domestic chicken. Crossbreeding Grey Junglefowl with domestic chicken can result in the development of new breeds with improved resistance to diseases and parasites, better adaptation to different environments, and increased egg and meat production. This wild ancestor of the domestic chicken has a greater genetic diversity than the domesticated chicken and can therefore provide a wider range of genetic traits for selection.

Moreover, Grey Junglefowl is also known to be more heat tolerant than the domestic chicken, and thus, crossing with domestic chicken could result in birds that can better withstand high temperatures and humidity, which is important in tropical and subtropical regions such as Pakistan. Furthermore, Grey Junglefowl is also known to have a longer laying period than domestic chicken and also lay larger eggs. This characteristic could be useful in creating a new breed of chicken that is more productive and efficient for egg production.

But the preservation of the genetic diversity of the wild ancestor is crucial in any breeding program. The Grey Junglefowl is considered to be a common bird in Pakistan and is not considered to be endangered, but habitat loss and hunting pressure may affect its population in some areas. Therefore, conservation efforts are necessary to ensure its continued survival in the wild.

In conclusion, the Grey Junglefowl is not only a fascinating bird species with a unique appearance but also holds great potential for the poultry industry. Its genetic diversity could lead to the development of new and improved breeds of domestic chicken. However, it is important to preserve and protect the wild ancestor's genetic diversity while utilizing it for breeding programs.

β€œA Community Effort: The Story of Government Syed Muhammad Aslam Village Model High School Namli Syedan”

By: Syed Ayaz Kazmi

In the remote village of Namli Syedan, 20km away from the city of Muzaffarabad, stood a school that was previously building-less, furniture-less, and had zero facilities. The school was held under open sky and the community had to face a lot of difficulties to provide education to their children.
As a lecturer of biology and zoology in various private colleges and academies of Muzaffarabad, I understood the importance of education in the rural areas and knew something needed to be done to address this issue. With the support of the local villagers, my private students and their families, my friends, my teachers from the university, Ilm-o-Adab foundation, and the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, I set out to bring a school to the community.
The journey was not easy, but with the support of all the people, we were able to construct a beautiful building for the school and provide all the necessary facilities for all the classes from play group to 10th standard. The facilities include computer laboratory, large scaled central library, electricity, water plant for drinking, washrooms for girls, boys and the staff, clerk office, staff room, principal office, internet facility for the students whenever they required, partial biology lab, and best class rooms for both winter and summer environment.
The school was initially named "Government Boys High School Namli Syedan" but after the request of one of the donors, who was the daughter of Advocate Late Syed Muhammad Aslam, the school name was changed to "Syed Muhammad Aslam High School Namli Syedan." However, during the school's inauguration ceremony, the District Education Officer of Muzaffarabad, "Mr. Tariq Shafi" announced that the school would be declared a Village Model School. In recognition of this status, the school's name was officially requested to change as "Government Syed Muhammad Aslam Village Model High School Namli Syedan."
I am honored to have served as the headmaster of the school since my appointment on 1st Feb 2020, by the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir through the selection under Public Service Commission. The impact of the school on the community has been nothing short of remarkable. Children who previously had no access to education now have the opportunity to learn and grow in a modern and well-equipped environment. The school's success would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the Chairman of the school management committee, Syed Khadim Hussain Shah, who played a remarkable role by giving his time, energy and support to the school. My other headmaster friends, Deputy District Education Officer Mr. Ali Chaudhary and my university professors also played a significant role in supporting the school development through donations.

I am grateful to Allah for His blessings and for making this project a success.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to everyone who helped make this school a reality, including the local villagers, my colleague staff, my private students and their families, my friends, my teachers from the university, Ilm-o-Adab foundation and the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It truly takes a community to build a school and I am honored to be a part of it. I look forward to continuing to work with the community to provide education and opportunities to the children of Namli Syedan. The school is a shining beacon of hope for education in rural areas.
