What is Purchasing power parity?
Purchasing power parity (PPP) is a way to compare the economic productivity and standards of living between countries. It is an economic theory that suggests that exchange rates between currencies will adjust so that the same basket of goods and services will cost the same in different countries, after the exchange rate is taken into account.
In other words, PPP compares how much it costs to purchase a representative basket of goods and services in different countries, by using the currencies of those countries. The idea behind this approach is that, in the long run, people will tend to purchase the same basket of goods and services, regardless of the country they live in. Therefore, the difference in the cost of that basket across countries can be used to compare the purchasing power of different currencies.
PPP can be used to compare GDP and living standards across countries, as well as to adjust for inflation. PPP GDP is GDP converted to international dollars using PPP rates. By using PPP GDP, comparisons of GDP between countries adjust for differences in cost of living.
