When attention-seeking behavior occurs, identifying its function is the first step toward effective intervention. In this session, maladaptive behaviors were not reinforced; instead, tantrums were calmly ignored, positive and appropriate behaviors were reinforced, and verbal redirection was used to guide the child toward an appropriate response.
✨ Target the function not just the behavior. Reinforce what you want to see more of.
A consistent approach between therapists and parents helps children learn more appropriate ways to seek attention and communicate their needs.
