Gymnosperms

✓✓Gymnosperms are xerophytic in nature.

✓✓Largest tree is the Sequoia giganteae (Redwood tree) is the gymnosperm.

✓✓Ginkgo ,Cycas and Metasequia are called as Living fossils.

✓✓Gymnosperms are fruitless Phanerogams.

✓✓Mostly Dimorphic leaves (Foliage and scally) in gymnosperms.

✓✓Xylem vessels and Companion cells are ABSENT.

✓✓Lateral veins are ABSENT in leaves and their function is performed by .... Transfusion tissues.

✓✓Gymnosperms are HETEROSPOROUS

✓✓ Agregate of the sporophylls (micro and megasporophylls ) make STROBILUS.

✓✓Cones are usually Monosporangiate.

✓✓All the Gymnosperm are Wind pollinated.

✓✓ Fertilization is SIPHONOGAMATIC ( by pollen tube ) and POROGAMOUS (Pollen grains enter through Microphyle ).

✓✓Male gamates in gymnosperms are Motile except in Cycas and Ginkgo.

✓✓ Anthridia are not produced in Gymnosperms.

✓✓ Archeogonia are found in Endosperm.

✓✓ Endosperm in Gymnosperms is HAPLOID and develop before Fertilization in the Nucellus of the ovule from the functional megaspores.

✓✓ Gametophyte generation is highly Reduced which is represented by Pollen grains and Endosperm.
