Awareness Session on Data Journalism and Countering Fake News Held at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan
Mardan: The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan organized an important awareness session today on the theme “Data Journalism and Countering Fake News.” Experienced journalist Lehaz Ali participated as a guest lecturer and briefed the students in detail about data journalism, research methods, and modern techniques to counter the spread of misinformation, drawing on his extensive professional experience.
Lehaz Ali highlighted that in today’s digital era, misinformation spreads rapidly, placing greater responsibility on journalists. He said, “Data journalism is rooted in transparency, research, and factual accuracy. Young journalists must master data tools, open-source platforms, and verification techniques to uphold the standards of professional journalism.”
The Chairman of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Farhad Safi, also emphasized the significance of the session. He stated,
“Our aim is to equip students with the practical requirements of modern journalism. Training sessions on data journalism and fake news are essential because the future of media depends on journalists who adhere to research and verification principles.” He added that the department will continue organizing such valuable sessions and workshops for the professional development of students.
Students attending the session also found it highly beneficial. According to student Muhammad Hasnain, “This session was eye-opening for us. We learned that not everything trending online qualifies as news, and it is the journalist’s responsibility to verify all information.”
Another student, Nayab Bibi, said, “Mr. Lehaz Ali explained data journalism in a simple and practical way. For the first time, we truly understood how dangerous misinformation can be and what tools can help us prevent its spread.”
At the end of the session, faculty members and students thanked Lehaz Ali and expressed their commitment to continuing such informative events in the future to enhance students’ learning and improve the overall standards of the university.
