My college life.....Part 6

Paradise or hell on earth?

One's aesthetic sense creates as well as appreciates beauty in the outer world. Beauty doesn't lie in the eyes of the beholder if it doesn't exist but how can beauty be proved to exist if there is no one to see it? The relationship between one's subjective experience inside and the objective reality outside is quite mysterious.
Having said this, the lush green lawns and gardens blossoming with countless different flowers at GCC, Thana would catch one's senses as one entered the college gate from the playground side on the west. The main pavement, surrounded by duranta with some other hedge plants, passed along a serene water pond which contained fish of various colours and sizes moving around in playful mood. The three main gardens were a captivating sight in the spring. The rose garden in the middle housed hundreds of different roses skillfully trimmed from sides to present a unique pattern. Green spaces in the central garden were available for study (if someone wanted) and relaxation. Sir Ashiq (Professor of English) would occasionally teach us Wordsworth, Keats, and Shakespeare in the lawns thus making romantic feelings irresistibly overflowing.
Credit for growing plants and flowers and maintaining the gardens/lawns throughout the year certainly goes to Sir Dost Muhammad sb. He was most often seen walking around and working in the gardens in his leisure time. For him, plucking flowers was the biggest crime one could dare to commit. I believe academic institutions should not only be centres of intellectual development and torchbearers of civilization but also the advocates of environmental protection. The irregular weather patterns suggest that the way we live is not only converting the green earth into a big desert but is also not sustainable. We have to change our attitude towards nature. The economic model (capitalism) has caused irreparable damage to the ecosystem. If not reversed, this system could make earth unliveable. The recent floods in Pakistan have amply demonstrated the catastrophic effects of climate change. We can make the hell or paradise on earth depending on how we deal with the mother nature. The beautiful gardens were the outcome of man's efforts and destroying the ecosystem is also our collective failure.

My college life--Part 5

Heartbroken:
I had never thought of losing my very close friend Abdus Saboor so soon! He died of cardiac arrest last Sunday at a very young age (May Allah shower His mercy on his soul. Ameen!). We became friends at GCC, Thana in 1992 and I met him last time on Nov. 13, 2022 in my son's wedding in Peshawar. His tragic death stunned me for hours unable to accept the bitter reality of life (a state of denial). Abdus Saboor was, without exaggeration, a very humble, polite, and sharp-minded student. He had the unique and enviable quality of balancing conflicting demands on his time and energies. One would find him at the forefront of curricular activities with as much energy devoted to social engagement. Known as the 'nightingale', he would sometimes (especially on free nights and special occasions) mesmerise boarders with his sweet voice singing Indian/Pakistani songs. I vividly remember Ismail Shahid and Qazi Mullah (famous Pashto actors) had visited our college in 1992 on the invitation of Saeed sb (Principal of the college) for entertaining students with their funny performance. At the end, Abdus Saboor sang a couple of Urdu/Pashtu songs in such a captivating tone that Ismail Shahid could not resist getting ecstatic and rewarded him with cash.
Abdus Saboor would always carry a smiling face, a soft tone, and a tender heart. Hailing from Shangla, he was in all respects an embodiment of Pashtun culture--hospitality, courage, loyalty, and simplicity. He never held back his knowledge and most often offered help, without being asked, to those lagging behind in studies. I have heard so many of his colleagues in FBR saying good things about him in performing his duties with diligence and utmost honesty.
The death of Abdus Saboor, at such a young age, should be a reminder for all of us. Life in this world is transitory and uncertain ! None of us will stay here forever. Let us pledge to make this life meaningful by living it in accordance with the will of Allah. Seeking pleasure (hedonism) and material wellbeing--the ultimate purpose of modern man--at the cost of spiritual development is nothing short of self-destruction.
I urge all my friends to pray for the soul of Abdus Saboor and start revisiting the vision (where one is and where one wants to be) and mission (the core purpose) of life.
