Planning a fully funded PhD in the USA for 2026/27? Know which options are still realistic.
For most international applicants, including Pakistanis, the strongest route is applying directly to U.S. PhD programs that fund students through fellowships, research assistantships (RA), or teaching assistantships (TA).
1. University-funded PhD programs
Check the written offer for tuition, stipend, health insurance, fees, summer funding, and the number of years covered. Princeton says it funds PhD students during regular enrollment; its 2026–27 fellowship rates include $52,680 for a 12-month humanities and social sciences fellowship. Cornell reports nearly 97% of its PhD students are fully funded through fellowships and assistantships. Funding varies by department.
2. Fulbright Pakistan
USEFP’s 2027 Fulbright application is closed. The deadline was April 1, 2026. The award supports graduate study expenses, but selection is competitive and eligibility requirements apply.
3. US–Pakistan Knowledge Corridor
The latest HEC deadline I found was April 30, 2026, for Fall 2026. HEC has not published a Fall 2027 deadline on its current program page. Eligibility includes university ranking, test score, age, and return-service conditions.
4. HEC Overseas Scholarship, Phase III
Batch IV closed on August 28, 2026. Follow HEC for future calls and verify that your field and chosen U.S. university are eligible.
Important: A professor’s positive reply is not a funding guarantee. Confirm the full package in writing. Some well-known fellowships have citizenship restrictions: NSF’s Graduate Research Fellowship requires U.S. citizenship, nationality, or permanent residency.
For Fall 2027, check department deadlines and prepare your applications now. Deadlines and funding terms differ by program.
