Aziz Jehan Begum Trust Institute for the Blind is designed to fulfill the educational training and rehabilitation needs of blind and visually impaired children up to matriculation level and beyond to assist them, throughout college life till they reach physical and financial independence. Education: Follows the prescribed curriculum of General Science for English Medium schools approved by the La
hore Board of Secondary Education upto matriculation/high school level. Additionally, students are trained in advanced English, Urdu, Arabic and Mathematics Braille, including contractions. Special emphasis is given to Computer Science, written and spoken English, which is the medium of instructions. Training: is given in the following basic living and special skills as an integral part of the training and rehabilitation program:
(a) Mobility concepts, movement inside and outside the home, walking with a sighted guide, walking with a cane and guide, walking by oneself with a long cane etc. (b) Orientation, developing senses of hearing, touch and smell, improving turns, direction and distance awareness, inter-relationship between time and distance etc. (c) Activities of daily living, personal hygiene, science and health, living skills i.e getting dressed, bathing, shaving, make-up, using the washroom, making beds, washing clothes and ironing, shopping, cooking, eating, cleaning the house, using the telephone, money identification and other household skills
(d) Co-curricular activities like music, crafts, computer studies, debates, declamation, poetry reading, drama etc. (e) Extra curricula activities, games, sports, physical exercises, posture improvement, recreational activities etc. Braille and talking books Library: regular assignments requiring library study to improve student’s performance in class work and to improve general knowledge.
2. Language laboratory to be used under the guidance of English or subject teacher of the respective classes.
3. Psychological Testing Lab: Assessment of individual talents, aptitudes and capabilities which will assist teachers to guide and counsel parents, determine the student’s options for a future life plan, and help them to overcome mental and psychological barriers which may be compounding the visually impaired.
4. Computer Lab: students will be instructed in the use of the computer and its possibilities for the visually impaired. Computer Science will be a compulsory subject for all students from class 4 upwards.
5. Music, art and crafts: training in music, arts and crafts will be integrated in the school program. Students can join the Institute’s Pipe Band.
6. Basic Training in handling and using common tools starts from class 6.
