Articles in OET Writing:

1. Understanding Nouns

Before diving into articles, let’s revisit nouns.

They can be categorized as follows:
* Countable Nouns:

These can be singular (one)
or plural (more than one) and are quantifiable. For instance:
* Singular: “A patient was admitted.”
* Plural: “Three patients were admitted.”

* Uncountable Nouns: These represent a mass, concept, or quantity and cannot be counted. For example:

* “She gave advice on post-operative care.”

2. Definite Article: ‘The’

Use ‘the’ when referring to specific nouns, whether singular, plural, countable, or uncountable. Examples:

* Singular, countable: “The patient in room 12 needs attention.”

* Plural, countable: “The patients in the ICU are critical.”

* Uncountable: “The equipment has been delivered.”

3. Indefinite Articles: ‘A’ and ‘An’

These are used with singular, countable nouns. The choice depends on the sound that follows:

* Use ‘a’ before consonant sounds: “a patient,” “a treatment.”

* Use ‘an’ before vowel sounds: “an examination,” “an IV drip.”

Remember, it’s about the following sound, not just the initial letter. For instance:

* “An MRI” (due to the pronunciation of ‘m’ as “Em”)

* “A urologist” (due to the pronunciation of the word’s start as “You”)

Additional examples:

* “A nurse is required in the ER.”

* “She presented with a persistent cough.”

* “He was treated for a fever and complained of a headache.”

* “An ultrasound revealed the issue.”

* “He requires an X-ray of the area.”

4. The Zero Article
No article is used with plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns when speaking generally. Examples:

* Plural, countable: “Doctors need to be vigilant during operations.”

* Uncountable: “Physiotherapy will help Mr. X regain mobility.”

Remember, the zero article refers to things in general, not specific instances. For instance:

* “Doctors” refers to the profession as a whole.

* “Equipment” refers to the concept in general.

5. Abbreviations
Deciding on articles with abbreviations can be tricky. Consider pronunciation:

* “An ECG/EEG/EMG” (due to the pronunciation of the abbreviation)

* “An upper respiratory infection”

6. Medical Conditions & Medication

* Do not use indefinite articles with medical conditions or medication names:
* “Hypertension”
* “Aspirin”

7. Treatment Procedures
* Do not use indefinite articles with medical/treatment procedures:
* “Dialysis”
* “Physiotherapy”

However, if a countable noun follows, you can use an indefinite article:
* “A dialysis bag”
* “A physiotherapy session”
* “A screening procedure”
* “A scanning report”
