It explains how gravity shapes the very fabric of space and time around a spherical object, like a star or a black hole, by treating spacetime like a flexible grid that bends under mass. When an object or even light moves through this curved region, its path is no longer straight but gently warped by the gravitational pull. The closer it gets to the massive body, the stronger this bending becomes, affecting how distances stretch and how time ticks.
Near extremely dense objects, this distortion grows so intense that even light struggles to escape, creating a boundary known as the event horizon. Inside this limit, all paths curve inward, making escape impossible. Outside it, the metric precisely predicts how clocks slow down, how light shifts in energy, and how orbits behave.
Scientists use this mathematical description as a powerful tool to understand phenomena like planetary motion, gravitational time dilation, and black holes—revealing how mass doesn’t just pull on objects, but reshapes the stage on which the universe unfolds.
