What is the purpose of reading a newspaper?

The core purpose of reading a newspaper is to keep oneself abreast of the news both locally and internationally.

Note: Never use a newspaper to learn English expression.

How to read a newspaper in the context of preparation:

- Read the front and back pages thoroughly because they contain the most important news of that day.

- Go through the International news pages; these are found alongside the back page.

- Lastly, read the editorials and the opinions of that day.

Some writers write on different areas concerning the competitive exam; their articles must be read by the aspirants.

- Maleeha Lodhi (Politics, Foreign Policy)

- Zahid Hussain (Politics)

- Ali Tauqeer Sheikh (Climate)

- Ishrat Hussain (Economy)

- Sakib Sherani (Economy)

- Ahmad Bilal Mehboob (Constitutional & Parliamentary Affairs)

- Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry (Foreign Policy)

- Amir Rana (Security)

- Tariq Khosa (Security & Law)

- Dr. Farzana Bari (Gender)

How to get the maximum benefit from a newspaper:

- Divide a register into the aforementioned parts and other themes concerning the syllabus of the competitive exam.

- Write the relevant data under a particular theme that you have mentioned in your register.

- Revise and do the written practice of that material.

Where to start the preparation for the competitive exam, CSS; a guideline for beginners:

Preliminary requirements:

i) Download syllabi and past papers on compulsory subjects from the FPSC website.

ii) Take a glance at the syllabus and past papers on compulsory subjects.

Overall preparation strategy:

1. Choose one subject, the easiest one among compulsories, of your own choice and start preparing it.

(I would recommend starting with Islamic Studies because it has a short syllabus and most of the aspirants have already studied it at their graduation level.)

How to prepare for a particular subject:

i) Take its syllabus and, from 2016 onward, past papers.
ii) Read at least two recommended books and make notes.
iii) Most importantly, prepare the relevant topic according to the demands of the examiner (as could be known through its past papers).

2. Read any English newspaper, preferably DAWN

3. Assess your Basic English Grammar and, if you find errors, revise it.

(An aspirant who has command over basic grammar should start writing about anything, be it politics, economy, society, climate, gender, etc., for written practice.)
