Government of Punjab has established a separate Department for Literacy & Non-Formal Basic Education in 2002 aiming at to address the problem of dropouts at the primary level and meet the emerging demand for Non-Formal Basic Education with functional Literacy and livelihood skills. In collaboration with international agencies like UNESCO & JICA, Literacy and NFBE Department has developed various

Projects i.e. Literacy Programme (32 Districts), Campaign for Enhancement of Literacy (04 Districts), Community Learning Centres (Sahiwal Division), Punjab Literacy & Livelihood Programme (Multan & DG Khan Division) and Brick kilns Project (Multan & Khanewal Districts) and now A new coming project i.e Punjab Accelerated Functional Literacy and NFBE project in all 36 districts of Punjab.
