🧬 This is not a course from an old brochure. It is listed for FALL 2026 right now.

MacEwan's Biological Sciences department describes BIOL 421 as a guided laboratory research project focused on how mammalian cells respond to environmental or chemical treatments.

Students work collaboratively and may use techniques such as:
✅ Mammalian cell culture
✅ RNA isolation
✅ Quantitative PCR (qPCR)
✅ Protein analysis
✅ Experimental design and data interpretation

The important part is the structure: students are not only watching a demonstration. They are working through a research question with modern molecular and cellular biology methods.

This is a senior course with prerequisites, so it is not something every first-year student walks into immediately.

🌡️ MacEwan students are using machine learning to study a problem you can actually feel: a hotter city.

In MacEwan's newest "Majoring in Curiosity: Cities" feature, applied statistics student Kevin Tran and computer science student Osman Jime worked with Dr. Wanhua Su on Edmonton's urban heat island effect.

They used machine-learning models with HOURLY WEATHER DATA from the past 10 years.

What happened?

✅ Summer heat patterns were easier to model
✅ Winter snow cover made prediction harder
✅ The students say separate seasonal models may be needed for better accuracy

That is a strong example of statistics and computer science leaving the worksheet and meeting a real urban problem.

And unlike our Week 8 Alberta Avenue post, this is not a rebrand or community-marketing story. It is a data-modelling project about temperature, cities and prediction.

🤖 MacEwan's president is talking directly about AI this September.

Her message is not "ignore AI."

It is also not "let AI do the thinking."

Dr. Annette Trimbee writes that students still need the things a model cannot outsource for them:
✅ Critical thinking
✅ Logical and analytical reasoning
✅ Discernment
✅ Curiosity
✅ The ability to question whether an answer actually makes sense

MacEwan says it is continuing to explore how AI can be integrated into higher learning as a PARTNER in thinking, not a replacement for it.

That distinction is going to matter more every year.

The value of university is not simply getting access to answers.

It is learning what to do with them.

🗂️ MacEwan had brand-new scholarly work presented on SEPTEMBER 18.

MacEwan librarian Robyn Hall presented at a symposium on community-engaged research data management.

Her focus was practical:

How do research projects stay findable and useful after the presentation is over?

The presentation highlights institutional repositories as one way to:
✅ Share community-engaged research outputs
✅ Preserve them digitally
✅ Keep research accessible beyond one class, conference or project
✅ Build systems that respond to the needs of researchers and communities

For students, research is not only about producing an assignment.

It is also about learning how knowledge is stored, shared and used.

🎓 MacEwan asked the Class of 2026 what they would tell students just starting university.

The #1 answer was not "study every second of the day."

It was: GET INVOLVED.

MacEwan says one third of the graduating students who shared advice put getting involved at the top of their list.

Across the full roundup, the recurring themes were:
✅ Get involved
✅ Make friends
✅ Be yourself and believe in yourself
✅ Enjoy the experience
✅ Ask for help
✅ Keep a healthy balance
✅ Manage your time and stay organized

That is useful because it comes from people who just finished the experience - not from an admissions slogan.

A degree matters. So does what you actually do with the four years around it.

📊 A class project at MacEwan did not end when the grade was submitted.

In a NEW September 2 MacEwan story, business student Fatima Shoaib and her marketing research group studied Edmonton's Alberta Avenue district.

Their recommendation? Rethink the area's brand identity.

Then it kept moving:
✅ The idea gained traction with the Alberta Avenue Business Association
✅ A rebrand committee was formed
✅ Shoaib presented the recommendation at a community meeting with close to 100 attendees
✅ The work expanded into formal community research
✅ The research team gathered 400+ survey responses from business owners and Edmonton residents
✅ The rebrand committee has now ratified a proposed core brand identity

This is not a generic "hands-on learning" promise. It is a current example of a student project entering a real community decision.

🎨 What happens when art borrows tools from science - and even generative AI?

A new exhibition opens at MacEwan's Mitchell Art Gallery this month.

Kelly Andres: Gleaning the Blue-Green runs SEPTEMBER 18 to DECEMBER 5, with a free opening reception on September 17.

MacEwan's gallery says the exhibition draws on the artist's attempts to understand wetlands and living systems through methods associated with scientific study, using sculpture, video, photography and performance.

One official exhibition image is described as StyleGAN-generated imagery trained on the artist's cyanotype dataset using Autolume.

That intersection - ecology, data, technology and art - is exactly the kind of thing that makes a university campus more interesting than a timetable of lectures.

🐶 This is an actual MacEwan student wellness event.

On SEPTEMBER 15, MacEwan Sport and Wellness is hosting a student-only Hatha yoga session with dogs from the WAGS program.

WAGS stands for Wellness Animals Giving Support. MacEwan describes the program as structured animal-assisted interaction designed to support:
✅ Student well-being
✅ Social connections
✅ Community-building

The current Fall schedule also has WAGS dogs visiting different campus spaces throughout the week.

University stress is real. Not every support has to look like sitting across a desk from someone. Sometimes a calm hour, movement and a very good dog are part of the campus experience too.

🌍 Studying in Canada does not mean every semester has to stay in Canada.

MacEwan's Education Abroad program helps students explore study and internship opportunities outside the country.

Right now, Fall 2026 students can attend Education Abroad information sessions to learn about:

✅ Internship possibilities
✅ How to finance an experience abroad

And on SEPTEMBER 23, MacEwan is holding its Education Abroad Fall Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For an international student, that is an interesting possibility: Canada can be the home base while your degree still builds international experience elsewhere.

Eligibility, destinations, costs and credit transfer depend on the specific opportunity, so students need to confirm the details before planning.

💻 Before buying extra software for university, check what MacEwan already gives students access to.

MacEwan's current Fall guide highlights a pretty useful student tech stack:
✅ Microsoft Office 365
✅ Grammarly Premium through the Student Technology Fund
✅ Virtual access to software through myApps
✅ Examples include Power BI, Sage 50 Accounting and QuickBooks
✅ Short-term laptop, charger, cable and accessory loans through the Library

MacEwan says the applications available on computers in its library and computer labs are also available online through myApps.

That can matter when you're arriving internationally and already spending heavily on tuition, travel and setup.

Important: software availability can change, so students should always check the current Tech Support page for the apps they actually need.
