Department of Paediatrics, King Edward Medical University is the premier Paediatric department of the country. It was established by the Late Prof. S.M.K. Wasti in a small room in Outpatient Department of Mayo Hospital, Lahore in 1948. Prof. S.M.K. Wasti assumed the charge as its first professor in 1953. Over the period of time the bed strength and facilities have increased and every successor of Prof. Wasti has contributed in the development of department and improving the services for the patients coming from all parts of the province. To cater for the ever increasing work load and increasing number of students and Postgraduate trainees in 2004, the second unit was created. To provide the specialize services, a new specialty block has been added to accommodate different sub-specialties. Prof. Muhammad Ashraf Sultan is currently Chairman of the Department and is incharge of Paediatric Unit-I.
The Paediatric Unit-I has Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, General Paediatrics and the subspecialties of Haem-oncology, Gastroenterology and Infectious Diseases while Neurology and Cardiology will soon be operational. The department is well equipped to handle all type of emergencies and to provide diagnostic services. The neonatal unit of Lady Willingdon Hospital is also attached to this unit.
This Department is a seat for learning, and education, and has produced many post graduates who, by now, are serving at different institutions of the country in different capacities.
