Student Alert: MPhil Admissions at ASSMS

A unique feature of the ASSMS MPhil Programme is that it is one of the few MPhil programmes offering a monthly stipend to selected students. This makes it an excellent opportunity for talented candidates who wish to pursue advanced studies in mathematics with financial support.

For admission details or any confusion regarding the application/submission process, please contact Mr. Asif at the ASSMS office.

**Day 2 Highlights | Youth Hackathon on “Building Mathematical Capacity Against Social Discrimination”**

Government College University Lahore, through the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences, hosted the Day 2 Panel Discussion of the Youth Hackathon on **“Building Mathematical Capacity Against Social Discrimination”** on **14 June**. The event was organized under the **International Mathematics Master initiative** with the support of the **Elsevier Mathematical Sciences Sponsorship Fund**.

The hackathon brought together selected students, mentors, faculty members, international representatives, and distinguished experts to explore social challenges through mathematics, statistics, data analysis, modelling, computer science, physics, and logical reasoning.

Before the panel discussion, young participants presented their group work on educational inequality, gender discrimination in STEM, rural-urban and socioeconomic disparities, social inclusion, youth empowerment, and civic participation. Their work reflected how mathematics can help convert social problems into structured, measurable, and evidence-based solutions.

The panel featured **Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nizamuddin (S.I)**, Pro-Rector of Superior University Lahore and Former Chairman PHEC; **Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shahid Soroya**, Director COMSATS University Islamabad, Sahiwal Campus; and **Dr. Farzana Arshad**, Assistant Professor at Government College University Lahore.

The speakers appreciated the students’ efforts and shared valuable perspectives on inclusive education, policy reform, out-of-school children, education data, employability, youth opportunities, and the need for a more flexible and interest-based education system. The discussion also emphasized the importance of encouraging science education and multidisciplinary research among young learners.

At the conclusion, **Prof. Dr. Khurram Shabbir**, local host of the international event, appreciated the diverse input of all panelists and highlighted that Pakistan often discusses issues such as education gaps, gender disparity, rural-urban differences, and economic barriers qualitatively. He emphasized that the strength of this initiative lies in encouraging young minds to **quantify, model, and analyze** such issues through mathematics.

Representatives from the **International Mathematics Master (IMM) APS, Italy**, including **Ms. Celeste Luciano**, Project and Operations Manager, and **Mr. Giacomo Umer**, were also acknowledged for their presence and support.

The Day 2 session marked an important step toward building an academic culture where young students use mathematics, scientific reasoning, and interdisciplinary knowledge for justice, inclusion, transparent policy thinking, and national development.

Day 1 of the IMM–ASSMS Youth Hackathon 2026 Successfully Begins!

The first day of the ''Youth Hackathon on Mathematical Modelling for Social Inclusion and Policy Challenges'' was successfully inaugurated on **13 June 2026** at the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS), Government College University Lahore.

The event is being organized under the initiative “Building Mathematical Capacity Against Social Discrimination: A Pilot Youth Hackathon Initiative,” funded by the **Elsevier Mathematical Sciences Sponsorship Fund and jointly conducted by the International Mathematics Master APS (IMM), Italy, and ASSMS, GCU Lahore.

The proceedings commenced with opening remarks by Prof. Dr. Khurram Shabbir, ASSMS, who welcomed participants from across Pakistan and highlighted the role of mathematics as a powerful tool for understanding societal challenges and supporting evidence-based decision-making. He emphasized that mathematical thinking can help young people contribute to addressing issues such as educational inequality, social exclusion, and unequal access to opportunities.

Prof. Dr. Peter Stevenhagen, President of IMM, introduced participants to the mission and international activities of IMM and provided an overview of the hackathon’s objectives. He underscored the importance of empowering youth to apply mathematical modelling and data-driven approaches to real-world social problems and policy challenges.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in interactive sessions, team-building activities, and collaborative discussions aimed at developing innovative mathematical models to address issues related to inclusion, discrimination, education, and social development.

The hackathon has brought together talented students and young researchers from various regions of Pakistan, creating a unique platform where mathematics, social awareness, and innovation converge to inspire positive societal change.

The activities will continue on **14 June 2026** with project presentations, a panel discussion featuring experts from academia, policy, and civil society, and the final showcase of solutions developed by participating teams.

**Together, we are demonstrating how mathematics can serve not only as a scientific discipline but also as a powerful instrument for understanding society and building a more inclusive future.**
